Is there an R.N. in the house?

In our house, it was my mom. Among many other things, she delighted in writing those notes periodically required to excuse one's absence from school. I couldn't have been more than eight or nine, when on one occasion she wrote, "Please excuse Loopy's absence from school yesterday. She suffered a gastrointestinal disturbance." Wide eyed, I gasped, "What's THAT??" "You had a bellyache!" she chuckled. One day, while riding my bike at lunch time, I fell off, landing squarely on my mouth. The next morning, my mom wrote, "Please excuse Loopy's absence from school yesterday afternoon. She suffered a fall from her bicycle, and spent the afternoon applying cold compresses to her lips and gums. The oral cavity is very vascular." "What does THAT mean?", I wanted to know. "Your mouth bleeds easily", she smiled. Another time she wrote, "Please excuse Loopy's absence from school yesterday. She suffered a bout of rhinorrhea." Hmmm--that sounded disgustingly like diarrhea to me. What was it?? "You had a cold--a runny nose!" she answered cheerily.

Among the things I miss most are the mischievous twinkle in her eye, and her wry sense of humor.---A great nurse and a great mom!
