Re: How to get back into “ The exercise Mode” again?

We have always walked daily in the late afternoon and it has always helped us physically as well as making us just feel better mentally. We are hopefully coming out of the second hottest summer since 1915 here and it has been far too hot to even be outside, let alone doing anything physical. At our age, it truly can be dangerous to try and walk outdoors when it is well over 100 degrees. DH goes to a rehab gym three days a week and does some exercises his cardio recommended and the therapist walked him though. He rides a bike there and we had one here and it collected dust so we sold it. I am looking for another one more like the one at the gym but they also far are over $2k...used...too expensive for a possible dust collector. We may try mall walking again even though the mall that reopened the walking hours is a further drive now.

It is indeed harder to get back into the mindset of exercising...but as soon as I can get back into a routine, even for a week, I know I will be back into the swing of things. The coming cooler weather should help being able to do more things outside. Always better than doing anything inside a basement or gym for me.

@Tinkrbl44  That wouldn't surprise me. DH thinks it's weird, too!

It has given me a broader understanding of that war and sadly enough, I can see it happening again if the world isn't careful.

The survivor stories are very interesting to me.

Obviously I don't know you, but the only thing that comes to mind is perhaps the emotion somehow fuels your workout.   Whatever the reason, glad you found something that works.

Re: How to get back into “ The exercise Mode” again?

In my nearly 72 yrs. I've been overnight, thin (lost over 100 lbs. right before I turned 30), I've done periods of walking miles a day, doing the gym.

Now my issue is not motivation, I just do not give a hoot.

Kudos to those that do but I'm am not plopping on any exercise for hours a day.

Asking myself that question too. I don't mind walking if the weather conditions are perfect - a rare occurrence. Last winter I did an inside walk video, but hurt my foot doing it.

"Hours a day"?  Don't know where you got that from, but most in your age bracket, are usually talking minutes a day.

Not sure what you saying "I lost over 100 lbs. right before you turned 30", over 40 years ago, has to do with anything, but hey, losing weight is a good thing for many.

Guess I care because I am still able, at 11 years your senior. Know it can help me from being a burden to my younger wife as time flies by.  As is said by a whole lot of people the last 3 years. "My body my choice"!

Re: How to get back into “ The exercise Mode” again?

@SeaMaiden @This is interesting topic. I have struggled with exercing over the years. One thing I did was I journal what I do every time and at the end of the year I will pay myself five dollars for each workout session. I have no idea what I'm going to do with the money but I'm excited about it. Just before I leave the house (when no one is wAtching) I put on a favorite dance song and dance a little to get my day started on happy note! I'm sure if anyone ever saw me...

Re: How to get back into “ The exercise Mode” again?

@hckynutjohn   I got the hours a day from post on page 3 of this thread.  She said she only rides her bike 3 hours a day now.  That is great if you like doing it.

The comment I made about my past weight loss indicated I did exercise years ago. I did it but hated every minute.

Now at 71 and 10 months, I don't give a hoot about exercise.  Been there done that, see no point in it now.

Thanks for your reply. I obviously missed the post about riding for 3 hours a day. Not sure of why that person spends that much time riding, but to me, it goes beyond just being in pretty good physical shape.

As far as losing weight! I lost about 60lb when I was 15 years old. That was in 1954 and there were few that even talked about exercise. I never heard anything about exercising, I just ate a lot less and lost the weight. No riding or walking or swimming, just eating a lot less.

That is why I didn't quite get your reference to your 100lb weight loss.

Each person chooses how they want to live, and I have never been one to try to get anyone to convert, unless specifically asked. Always appreciate cordial replies.

Hi @AuntG,

Got a kick out of your comment "perfect weather conditions". I didn't think there was one.

What kind of injury did you get on your foot from that "walk video"? Were you walking on a Treadmill maybe? Hopefully it has healed and you are walking freely once again. I mean, just to get from place to place, not as an exercise.

Be well,

Re: How to get back into “ The exercise Mode” again?

@hckynutjohn  When I dropped the 100 lbs. I was a Pepsiholic. Rarely drank water, never coffee, tea.  Got a stenosis of the ureathra. The fix was to have it stretched. Not pleasant.  Urologist said to drink just water. Junk food wasn't the same accompanied by water. The weight came off.  But I was young then.

As I got older the only way I could lose any weight  was going to the gym several times a week and use the stairmaster for an hour and to do weights.  I hated it but I did it.

Again, now I just don't care.
