Why would she need to do anything? What says she will have the problem?

@151949 I did have a hysterectomy at 40 & started taking Premarin then. 15 yrs. ago I had a double mastectomy (benign, but dense breasts that could no longer provide clear mammograms ) & reconstruction. Without the risk of breast cancer or uteran cancer, my doc feels it’s safe to continue this low dose several times a week indefinitely. I guess I kind of lucked out.
What do you plan to do to keep from getting blood clots or pulmonary or heart disease.
What are you doing to prevent blood clots, pulmonary disease, and heart disease? Have you come up with a miracle treatment?

@trenet wrote:My hot flashes began 25 years ago at age 40 as a result of chemotherapy-induced menopause. (Chronic Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma)
I think they continued about 15+ years. I had some increases during the subsequent chemo and biological treatments for the lymphoma but, gradually they lessened.
Three years ago when I began treatment (ongoing) for metastatic breast cancer, (Ibrance and Letrozole) the hot flashes and sweating - day and night - increased drastically. I didn’t think I had that much estrogen left to block! Who knew you could sweat even behind your ears?!!
(My oncologist had me try Effexor to alleviate the hot flashes but, I was not able to take it as it gave me extremely bad headaches)
@Coquille Wishing you coolness and good health.
I I also suffered from terrible not flashes and sweating whi!e on medication to block estrogen after breast cancer. I did get relief from Paroxatine a prescription medication.Ask your doctor because my life was horrible before starting that drug. We played with the dosage til we found the dosage that worked. Em

@wilma wrote:My eldest sister never had many hot flashes. My middle sister who is almost 70 still has them. Mine started about 10 years ago in my mid 40s. I was having at least 10 a day and was miserable. My doctor tried all kinds of OTC supplements but none helped. Finally, went on HRT which helped tremendously. I was on the higher dose for a few years and then tried to stop due to health risks. Oh, my! They came back worse than before so my doc put me on the lowest dose. I am having a few flashes a week now. Doc says I can stay on lower dose for a few years, but she wants me off HRT before I hit 60. I am not looking forward to that day.
I was on HRT for maybe 6-7 years before I stopped. The first time I tried was a disaster. My hot flashes came back with a vengeance after about a week without pills. The second time about a year later I did it over a period of about 4 months. First I cut the pill in half and did that for about 2 months, then I cut the half in half and did that for a month, then I took a half of a half every other day and after another month I went to every 3 days until I was finally off completely. Kind of a pain but it’s better than cold turkey.

@trenet: I thought i would mention, I have found that the more foods I eat that contain sugar, the worse my hot flashes get. Sometimes, I would get 2-3 an hour and they would sometimes last up to 15 minutes each one. When I deleted sugar from my diet, my hot flashes diminished markedly. I stopped having night sweats and sometimes I only had 1or 2 flashes a day. When I did have a flash, it lasted for a very short period of time. A benefit of getting off of sugar, is that my A1C dropped. It wasn't really high to begin with but still, it's a good benefit. I also lost weight but that wasn't a good thing for me. 😎

I had hot and cold flashes but never extremely bad. I still have hot flashes every once in a while though I'm no longer in menopause. I have read that some people never get rid of them.

I'm 62 and still get hf. I have to dress in layers all year round. It's the only way I can cope.
@SilleeMee YUP! I don't have "summer" or "winter clothing. I have simple tops and various weights of cardigans, and tank tops. In the winter, I wear a top, with a tank underneath, and a sweater on top, and then take the sweater on and off all day. In milder weather, I just wear a top and a tank. In the summer, I just wear a top. But, even in the summer, I always have a sweater handy, that goes on and off all day.
My hypothyroidism may be making this worse. But, who knows. I remember, back when I was about 53, asking my gynecologist to run a test to see if I was post-meno yet.....I had a hysterectomy years ago and only have my ovaries. She said there was no use, because I no longer got periods, and the hormonal symptoms would probably continue, to some degree, forever. UGGGGHHHHH!

@OnlyShopsOnline I have the same problem. Even though I think I'm done with the hot flashes I'm hypothyroid & still always hot.
I don't own any long sleeve shirts. I wear the same shirts all year round. I just wear a cardi in the winter with my short sleeve shirts but have to take it off when I get where I'm going because it's always hot. I don't need a cardi in the summer at all.
I take Andrew Lessmans Womans Wellness or Ultimate Womans Wellness. Been buying the Ultimate lately since it's been on sale. I only take 1 per day. I should try 2 per day to see if I feel better. I'm still having mood swings. Don't know if it's from menopause, being hypothyroid or something else.
I would just like to feel like my old self but I'm beginning to realize that's never going to happen.

I never had many hot flashes, and the few I had never bothered me. Mainly because before menopause I had a severe case of PMS that got progressively worse as I got older. For two weeks of every month I felt like death warmed over. It was awful. Thankfully, I never had cramps - just an all over sick feeling. I was so happy to hit menopause.
Once menopause was over, no hot flashes at all. So I’m a happy camper now. No PMS and no hot flashes.

@Nightowlz Have you had your thyroid levels tested lately? Always hot would be more likely caused by taking too much thyroid medication than not having enough. When I had my last thyroid medication increase, for the first few weeks, I was warm. Now, I'm going to be needing another increase soon, and I'm back to the chills....in between hot flashes.
It was close to 90 today. It's cool in our house, and I have on a t-shirt, with a tank shirt under it, and a light weight cardigan. I went outside for about 10 minutes to show my husband something that needed to be done in our landscaping. I was out there for several minutes before I realized I still had my sweater on.
Now, I don't have a thyroid at all, so that may be making my situation worse. We're having a hard time stabilzing my meds and hormone levels.
BTW, if you get thyroid testing, don't let them get away with testing TSH. It's mostly useless. You want them to test TSH, Free T3, Free T4 and Reverse T3.
