Re: Hormone Therapy for Prostate Cancer

My dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer at age 79. The treatment was daily radiation for 3 months, then hormone shots every three months for 2 years. The radiation side effects were mostly incontinence. The hormone side effects seem to be more of a challenge. Mood swings, hot flashes, fatigue are an issue, BUT the treatment is working. He says he now understands what my mom went thru during menopause, so at least we can laugh about that!

Wishing you the best of luck!!

Re: Hormone Therapy for Prostate Cancer

  I know someone who had prostate cancer & was treated with cyber knife.It was a treatment that lasted for a few minutes a day for about 5 consecutive days.He was told he’s cancer free now.

  I don’t know much about this treatment but it may be worth checking out.

  Good luck!!

@Calcgirl

Several of my friends have had this cancer over the years. One of them had the more aggressive type. He went for radiation and he now days he regrets it. He has no control of his bladder and in lieu of a catheter(not sure that was/is an option, haven't talked with him lately), he wears whatever they call the underwear for those purposes.

@goldensrbest

I am sorry to read this about your husband. Way too young, and having to live with this for 10 years! This had to be so very hard on you also. I did not know this and I know this was several years ago, just want to tell you that I hope time may have helped your grief, even if it is just a little bit.

I am sorry, and my best to you.

Re: Hormone Therapy for Prostate Cancer

My husband had cancer of the lymph nodes and a mass in his neck found early in 2015. The treatment was aggressive with 35 daily radiation treatments and 6 weekly chemo sessions. He barely survived and had a feeding tube for 8 months and was hospitalized for the last 2 1/2 weeks of his treatment. A followup PET scan then showed questionable findings and he had a bilateral neck dissection and a pattern of lymph nodes removed from both sides of his neck. Serious surgery and he survived without another feeding tube and many months of swallow therapy and now eats most foods again. During a follow up PET scan in 2016 there were findings in his prostate and a biopsy confirmed cancer, but the non-aggressive type. He does not want any further invasive surgery, chemo and cannot have any more radiation. He had one hormone injection 12/16 and his PSA level stays low and he did not complain of any side effects. Each 3 month test has been good and due again next week for bloodwork and follow up appointment. Good luck to your husband with whatever he chooses. We live in a small town and his doctors have done great with my husband. It can be a long road and again, best wishes.
