My sweetheart had aggressive prostate cancer and 15 months ago had the prostate removed. Now the PSA is 0.2 and the Oncologist recommends a combination of radiation with a form of hormone therapy that eliminates testestrone from the body to starve the cancer cells. Unfortunately, the side affects sound scary and he is leaning more towards just trying the radiation.
Question, is there anyone here who has experience with having hormone deprivation therapy ?

My dad had the same treatment but it was many years ago, I don't remember much except that he complained about the lack of testosterone and what it does to your body. He did remain cancer free afterwards though.

My husband had surgery 5 years ago for prostate cancer followed by 7 weeks of radiation. He now deals with chronic pain and damage to his colon from the radiation. I guess there is no easy answer.

Sorry to hear you're DH is going though this. A friend had his prostate removed and had radiation. He has had no reoccurance. PSA is very low too.
I hope everything works out for you and your DH. Putting you in my prayers tonight.

Of course every case and every patient is different, but I just finished radiation for breast cancer and have been on hormone blockers for 4 months now, with the only side effects being a little joint stiffness in the morning that goes away as soon as I get moving. I plan to stay with it for 5 years. I was afraid when I heard about the side effects too but really for many people, the side effects are well tolerated.
Best wishes and prayers for you and DH that treatment and healing goes well.

My DH had his removed I think 15 years ago and did not have any further treatment (radiation) and he has been cancer free ever since!
My neighbor on the other hand elected to have seed treatment (years ago) and something else and is not feeling well now - he does not want the hormone treatment as he does not like the side effects - don't know what those are but he has been reading up on it.
Good Luck

Had a good friend suffering with prostate cancer. He elected after surgery to take hormones. He suffered from hot flashes terribly.

My father had prostate cancer a while back. He had radiation treatment and now has Eligard and Prolia injections every six months. The Eligard is a hormone suppressant, and the Prolia is because hormone suppression causes bone loss and the Prolia prevents that (I think that's how the urologist described what the Prolia was for). His prostate cancer has not returned, so I consider the treatment a success for him.
He has had no side effects from the injections that I'm aware of. I've been going to his urologist appts. with him for the last year and a half.
