I am in pain. I just deal with.it because others depend on me..ie my pets. I have osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and collapsed vertebrae in my lower spine. I think I can put surgery off for awhile if I use a cane.
I am sorry your cousin's case was so traumatic with horrible complications. I hope he can recover and be pain-free again. The details you provided about you and your cousin's surgery makes me wonder whether it would be better to live with this, rather than risk these potential high risk complications.

I was wondering about this too (oral antibiotics)

@AnyaK MRSA can be tested by other methods like blood, urine etc. if you are so sensitive to nasal swab. The other reason you are required to be screened is not only for your protection, but also the other patients in the facility. MRSA is contagious. If you test positive the potential to infect others is real. So bottom line protect yourself and others.

@AnyaK I've had 3 joints replaced. Both hips and my Right knee.
L HIP: 2008
R HIP: 2017
R KNEE: 2019
I live in Phx, AZ. I've NEVER had my nose swabbed for any of the surgeries.

@Katabalu I had the EXACT SAME pre-op procedures and requirements for my 3 joint replacements here in Phoenix as you did.
That included the STRONG ADMONITION from each surgeon (different surgeons for each replacement) to take antibiotics 1 hr prior to dental work for 2 yrs.

Hip replaced in June 2023.
YES I had a nasal swab, and YES I just took a dose of penicillin before my teeth cleaning this week.
Listen to your doctor. GET the hip replaced...you will NOT regret it.
I wasted a year of my life thinking it was back pain.
Recovery for me was very fast and you'd never know I had it done in June.
Yesterday I cleaned the gutters on my ranch home from a ladder.
LIsten to your surgeon. The swab takes five minutes if that. For all the reasons other posters here mentioned about staph and MRSA.
Sheeesh. Doesn't ANYBODY think doctors know anything today? They went to school for almost a decade and know what they're talking about. It's called SCIENCE.
Or..sit home with the hip pain and gripe about a tiny little nasal swab.
Again. Sheeesh.
Can't you ASK your doctor why it's necessary? Why come to a shopping channel forum to question it?

Okay, I'm curious...just how far up the nose does the swab go? I think that's what is upsetting the OP. No one has mentioned it.
Is it a simple swabbing of the nose or does it go way up? I may have to get knee replacement at some point in the future. Sometimes it's good to know in advance what to expect so one can mentally prepare themselves.

@Desertdi TRUE...but that's a prerequisite to ANY surgery, as we know! Also, the medical power of attorney. Very standard.
