Re: Hemoglobin results

[ Edited ]

@hondagirl

After being anemic and/or borderline anemic for over 7 years, the primary thing that gradually moved my Hemoglobin numbers up to 13-15, was the going on the B-12 regimen, suggested by my Hematologist.

It required a B-12 injection once a week for 1 month. It then/now requires me to get it once every month. Without this program no food or iron supplement helped me 1 iota, and the pills never bothered my stomach.

These monthly injection cost me, out-of-pocket, $3.60 and supplements were much more expensive and did little to nothing to help get/keep any of my blood Hemoglobin or Iron Ferritin numbers in a good range. Still need an Iron Infusion occasionally(had half of 1 yesterda(250mg and will get the other 250mg next Monday).

Nothing, including Iron Rich foods, did little to raise and/or maintain my much higher Hemoglobin levels. Might be something to check out with your PCP or Hematologist next visit. Sure works for me with my Hemoglobin numbers, and is cheaper than I thought.

I am on Medicare and United Health Care is my secondary insurer.

@hondagirl,

You want to look for Flintstones Complete that has 18 mg of iron; they will be easier on your system than other iron supplements.   Cream of Wheat cereal is also an iron builder.

I just purchased the Flintstone's Complete vitamins and will give it a try.  Took one the other day to see how it reacts and so far so good.   Seems like this might work for me.  Unfortunately I do not like any hot cereals....Never did.. Thanks for the info....

The iron pills that I tried taking also gave me diarrhea besides stomach cramps for two days... So now I will try Flintstones Complete Vitamins which has iron... Iron can be so hard for me to take.  Gave one iron pilll to a friend to try and they did not have the same reaction that I did - so it's me... The pharmacist was no help in finding a pill for me so I gave up asking...
