What causes them and what helps? I've had them for 4 days! They're worse at night. Thank you for suggestions!!!

@fortune My sympathy as I've had two outbreaks in my lifetime. I had no clue what caused either, although it was undoubtedly a reaction to something. Google it for details. I took Benedryl and got better very fast. I suggest you go find some right now.

It's a temporary relief, but try soaking in a colloidal oatmeal bath. Aveeno makes a good one.
Do you by chance live in an area that's having a high pollen count, i.e., tree and grass, right now? The worse Summer of hives I ever had was during such a time. That's when I learned to eat honey only produced from local bees. The idea is to acclimate your body with local environmental conditions.
I hope you get relief soon, @fortune . I know too well the misery you're feeling.

No one can say what causes them. It's your body's reaction to something. Oatmeal baths or Calamine lotion is a relief. My daughter suffered from them for years. She has many allergies. Had her to several doctors. They had no answers.

@Kachina624 Are you ready for your laugh of the day? I got an awful case of hives the day after I had the oral surgery for dental implants. It was all over my body.....fire red rash, and the burning was like I had been in the AZ sun for a whole day.
I thought I had RADIATION POISONING from all the X-rays. Paged the doctor in the middle of the night, and he told me to take Benedryl, too (which I always have for hay fever). Turned out to be an allergy to the antibiotic he prescribed. di

Hives can be brought on by stress or an allergic reaction. Years ago, when we purchased our very first house, I got hives. I remember using Calamine lotion, as was suggested by a work colleague, and they eventually went away.
If you started a new/different medication, read the 'side effects' as it could be the culprit. Also, a lot of information if you Google it. If it persists, or worsens, of course, see your doctor.

I feel for you. I've had hives and it's not fun. If they aren't getting better, call your dr.
My hives are allergic reactions. I break out in hives from certain weeds and flowers, a specific scent in soaps, body washes, detergents, dishsoap, and if I take a specific medication.
Go back to before the hives showed up and think about everything you touched and ate. It is very likely one of those things.

I know I get hives from amoxiccilan but in early March I broke out in raised, itchy, red and white hives all over my legs from my ankles to my hips and from my shoulders to my wrists. I had not idea what caused them. I finally went to the dr and was prescribed a dose of oral steroids. I had been taking Benedryl with no relief. Eventually, the steroids helped but it was really unpleasant. Good luck to you.

@fortune...welcome to my world! My allergist told me that even pollen can make a person who is sensitive break out in hives.
Even if you do not have a sensitivity to a certain food in the past, you can develop an allergy to it later in life. Try an elimination diet, also check your detergents and see if they added any new preservatives. There are a few that are highly sensitizing.
Good luck and feel better!
