Aren't oats a grain? I'm confused. What grains are you cutting out? Which ones are supposed to be bad for you? I can't wrap my mind around the idea that bread (the staff of life, they used to call it) is now popularly viewed as toxic. I thought whole grains were supposed to be good for you.

There are no healthy modern grains. What they ate in Biblical times is not what is available today. That is marketing.

Thanks for the suggestion, that would be an easy alternative while adding more nutritional benefits and no gluten. My mom always used crushed up "dutch rusk" or bread crumbs so I just followed by tradition. I'm assuming you use something like regular Quaker Oats and not steel cut?

Not all oatmeal is gluten free.

And gluten is not the only health issue when it comes to grains. Grain brain is not about avoiding gluten.

As I already said, I've just started the book and, unfortunately, I've had to set it aside temporarily due to other demands on my time. My impression of his message this far, though, is that Dr. P recommends avoiding grains, but gluten is also included. He's also against sweet fruits and carrots, and only recommends berries in modest amounts. He has recommendations on oils to use and those to avoid. He wants people to stay away from sugar, but in the special occasions when it's needed, he only recommends a specific type. I'm not sure off hand, but I think it might be stevia or agave....haven't gotten that far yet. He also warns against the use of statins.

This is very interesting, I eat the same way according to Dr.Bernstein's diabetic diet! I avoid gluten, grains, sugars and sweet fruits..Dr B advises healthy oils, olive, avocados and full fat yogurt etc. I also use stevia and agave in small amounts.

I buy Bobs Red Mill gluten-free Scottish Oatmeal and I use that as a binder in my meatloaf. I also switched to either grass-fed beef or ground bison and its very good.

I have the book, and am going to start reading it this week. For those of you that eat grain free what do you eat?

When I made meatloaf I always used oats. But that's a grain, too, right?

Is the new theory that ALL grains are bad for you? I suppose it would vary from one person to the next. I do have an esophagus condition that seems to be most aggravated by bread-type foods and sometimes meat. It usually causes so much pain that I have to 'refund' because it just won't go past the esophagus.

But I find that, in moderation and not very frequently, I can get away with consuming these things with a minimum of discomfort.

IMO, refined sugar and other simple carbs are the real enemy. Those things are just purely toxic and anybody who stops, or at least cuts back to nearly nothing, consuming them will be much the better for it in a myriad of ways.

Chickenbutt, it is not a theory. It is proven science & biology.

Humans have not evolved to the point where we can digest grains completely. Not everyone has side effects that are noticeable though. Then, add to that how mankind has altered the grains of the past w/o realizing it was making them worse.

I eat other things. lol...

I don't eat many processed foods. I really do not try to replace grains much but you can make breads using healthy ingredients like almond meal and coconut flour.

My little min pin refused to eat her food. I switched her back to grain free and she loves it! If the grains are bad for me, I figure they're not great for her. I think thats why so many cats and dogs are getting diabetes today.
