One other unexpected benefit to cutting grains/reducing carbs (for me) is that my reflux completely went away. Mine was terrible and was on prescription medications and had to sleep with pillows to keep my head elevated. No more problems with that no matter how many spices I use

Hi Iam..I have a friend that eats rice cakes all day..she has reflux and sleeps on a pillow for elevation too, I will let her know!

Same here! It was very unexpected because I seriously reduced grains and completely eliminated refined sugar to get my blood sugar under control, but I'm very pleased about the acid reflux being gone gone gone!

I'm so glad to be reading these positive reactions. Please keep the discussion going so we can all learn more about the benefits of reducing/eliminating grains and your impressions on the information in the book. My niece's husband dropped 25# without even working at it, just by following the recommendations in the book.

We've already started heading in that direction before the book was recommended to us, but haven't completely eliminated all grains. We still consume some sugar, but I've quit the fake stuff....drinking tea and water in place of pop.

This might be a dumb question, but how do you make a meatloaf w/o bread crumbs. Just not make it, right?

There are some Paleo meatloaf recipes that you can google that use almond flour or almond meal as the binder.

So you don't have to use a "less bad" grain (is there such a thing?)

I cut out grains at the beginning of 2013. Longstanding gastro issues resolved (I also gave up dairy). When I have cheated the gastro issues returned.

I have no doubt that grains (and dairy) are no good for me!

I have always made my meatloaf with oatmeal and it is yummy!!! I much prefer it to breadcrumbs.

Thanks for the suggestion, that would be an easy alternative while adding more nutritional benefits and no gluten. My mom always used crushed up "dutch rusk" or bread crumbs so I just followed by tradition. I'm assuming you use something like regular Quaker Oats and not steel cut?

Not all oatmeal is gluten free.

Not all oatmeal is gluten free.

And gluten is not the only health issue when it comes to grains. Grain brain is not about avoiding gluten.

Should we avoid all grains if we follow this plan? I didn't read this book yet but plan to.

I stopped eating wheat/grains after reading Wheat Belly last year. My husband and I are currently reading Grain Brain which gives the same type of information but more about our brain health. Certainly reinforces what I believe.

As far as meatloaf is concerned, I make this occasionally with grass-fed ground beef and use oatmeal and or flax seed in place of bread crumbs. Works great.
