Re: Essential Oils please share what you know?

@x Hedge

I can’t even believe that I might be able to wear a fragrance after avoiding them for so long! Doing the happy dance!

I ordered helichrysum essential oil this morning...in a bit larger size.

EOs helped with spasms in the middle of an IBS attack. EOs also alleviated some awful swelling of joints back in January!

The NIH has been testing EOs for their antibiotic/antifungal activities.

Re: Essential Oils please share what you know?

Some oils diffused can harm Cats, dogs and birds.  This is just part of one article.

Misinformation is an enormous problem in this area as well. As an increasing amount of people turn to a more natural approach at life, companies are jumping to cash in. Thousands of products include essential oils in their ingredients; pet products are no different. The average person, unaware of the dangers, can easily think these products would be completely safe when in fact they are not.

Pennyroyal (Hedeoma pulegioides), for instance, is widely used as flea control. This oil is a known abortifacient in humans, and considered a toxin to the liver and the kidneys. Not exactly a strong selling point, although it is very good at keeping fleas at bay!

Many products for cats also contain essential oils. Unfortunately for the cats, many cat owners are unaware that by using these products, they can slowly cause toxins to build up in the feline's system, causing a slow onset of organ failure. A cat's liver cannot process toxins as a human's or even a dog's can, and the chemical constituents of the oils, such as terpenes, phenols, and ketones, are no exception. The effects of these can be immediate in showing up, or can take years.

Birds are well known for being sensitive to scents and particles in the air, and essential oils are no different. Gillian Willis, a toxicologist in Vancouver, has seen many cases of avian poisoning, including a well-meaning cockatiel owner who, upon seeing an abrasion on her bird's foot, applied a drop of Tea Tree oil. The bird became depressed and even with veterinary intervention, died within 24 hours of respiratory failure. Even diffusing oils around a bird can produce dire consequences

Re: Essential Oils please share what you know?

As a pet owner I don't diffuse any oils or use room freshener products.

I can recommend Arbor Oil's eucalyptus oil. Spray bottle, you can buy on their website. I use this nightly, spray on flannel pillow cases, no staining. Relives nightly sinus congestion.

If you want a nice kick to your lavender oil, Zum makes a nice spray they combine with lemon oil.

Tea tree is a good anti-viral, anti-microbial. I use a drop when in water rinsing my hair to clean the scalp. Thieves is also a good anti bacterial, anti microbial. Interesting story behind it.

Get a book from a trusted source before you invest in oils as they are pricey.

Re: Essential Oils please share what you know?

As others noted, there is no such thing as therapeutic oil. I contacted a manufacturer once to ask what they considered to be a therapeutic essential oil and was told it just meant it was not to be taken internaly.

Also note that a lot of essential oil isnt' really essential oil, it's adulterated with cheaper carrier oils. There are some good guides online that explain how to tell the difference.

I like oils for a diffuser because they smell good, but I don't believe the claims that they do this or that just because you smell them. I think the placebo effect is strong here, especially when some scents are linked to certain memories.

Pepperment has never helped my migraines. However, I do like peppermint and similar oils if I have a cold.

I know someone who claims she cured Bells Palsy with essential oils.... she rubs frankincense into her feet. Some people believe in Chinese medicine where each section of the soul of the foot corresponds to an organ.

Re: Essential Oils please share what you know?

A year ago, during a busy, before church morning, i opened my oven thinking i would just check the casserole. Wellllll, it looked done and i actually grabbed the oven rack to pull it out amd burned my hand. I put it under water and then put straight Bulgarian lavender oil on it. I thought for sure i wasnt going to church as I needed to round brush, blow dry my long hair, which definitely required the burned fingers. An hour later, i was actually able to dry my hair and went to church. When i got there, i showed a friend my fingers and they were barely red! No blisters. It was amazing and I always have lavender oil in my kitchen now.  For sun burns, i add several drops of lavender oil to aloe vera juice and put in on the skin.

Hands down the best essential oils are from Young Living (expensive but definitely worth it)....all of that other stuff on the market is cheap and stinky!

Yes, I have been having miraculous results with essential oils.

The nih has been testing various for various properties. The nih noted that the “medicinal (they didn’t use this word) properties” are mediated by the odors they emit.

Think of sitting in a field of yellow flowers (Helichrysum Italicum). Bees would like that pollen; some insects would be repelled. The flower’s properties and chemicals have developed over centuries to prolong the plants’ life.

Tests have been performed to evaluate the essential oil’s activity to kill staph bacteria and it’s efficiency as a pesticide.

Deep Blue by doTerra is nothing short of miraculous for muscle pain, joint distress (mine), etc. Helichrysum I purchased through two different companies.
