We had it in our family (and one son visited only one hour and caught it). I knew it wasn't an ordinary tummy bug. As I described it to my manager in a middle-of-the-night phone call to his voice mail to let him know why I wasn't coming in to work that day, whatever hit me was "violent." I thought it was food poisoning of the worst sort.
Anyway, he -- a big and tall strapping Texan -- got it and told me later: "I now understand what you meant when you said that it beats you up and is 'violent.' " It took all of us at least four days to recover.
[I have now learned that some food poisoning is contagious. I never thought of it in terms of passing the germs on to someone else. I served cake the day my one son visited. My sick fingers lifted up the cake, and he got the germs, I'm afraid. Must add that all during this period, I washed my hands scrupulously clean, wiped down everything with Lysol and had, of course, washed my hands carefully before serving the cake.]
