I get them when I am very stressed. I had a lot of them after a heart attack last year. I was on a med that they took me off because I was getting them while driving....it was a nitrate for my heart. I get zig-zag lines and they scare me even though I know it's OK. I was told people who get them are more prone to strokes...

@Trinity11

Mine are zig zag also.

I was told the exact opposite . . . that they have nothing to do with strokes.  I will google it.  I have low blood pressure (avg 117/68) so I have never felt I was a candidate for strokes.

They do happen to be a rare side effect of the med I am now taking called Xifaxan for newly diagnosed SIBO.

ETA:  I did google the difference between the similar symptoms, and TIAs or strokes usually attack suddenly and progress quickly to more serious symptoms, while the migraine auras come on slowly and go away with no other symptoms other than the migraine.

Most of what I read indicates that if the attacks differ from what one is accustomed to, then a call to 911 is indicated immediately.  Hopefully one is not alone when that happens because the strokes incapacitate very quickly.

It meant that if you get migraine auras you are more "prone" to having a stroke. Something about the condition of having migraines makes a person more susceptible to a stroke.

Lilac Tree--I get them.  Please see a good neurologist and/or opthalmologist ASAP. You need to rule out a potentially serious problem, which mine unfortunately is.  In your case, it may just be a family trait, but you need to be sure.

@vsm

I just had my yearly opthalmology exam two weeks ago.  Other than minimal cataracts (not yet recommended for removal), I was told I have no abnormalities.

I am so sorry to hear that your symptoms are more serious.  I hope you are getting adequate treatment and will be OK.  (((hugs)))

Thanks so much, Lilac Tree. Very glad you saw an opthalmologist and got a clean bill of health (other than the beginning of cataracts, which I have too!).  I hope you'll consider eventually seeing a neurologist as well, if there's any change in frequency or intensity of the visual disturbances.  God bless you.

@LilacTree

I just have to say that I am sorry for anyone who must deal with migraines.

@tends2dogs

My doctor used to prescribe steroids for my migraines "to stop the pain cycle" and that would usually work.

The auras I had, which were more like visual disturbances involving light, were way more troubling to me than the pain of the headache. The headaches could last up to 24 hours.

Yes, I started having occular migraines without pain over a dozen years ago.  I went to specialist upon specialist to rule out retinal detachment since I had no pain. I usually get them a couple time a month and they only last a few minutes.  What I see is best described as silver fireworks. 😕

Both of my kids get occular migraines, but they do have the subsequent pain.

Yes, I get them and have for years. Mine usually last 30 minutes and they start like a little round spot with jagged edges and turn into what I call a boomerang shape. They can come on at any time. I used to think it was from my exposure to bright lights but now I get them while I am just relaxing and watch TV..

Me too.

Mine, few and far between, last about 30 minutes and end with a slight headache.

When mine start it's like looking through wavy, wet glass in the outer corner of my left eye.

The last one happened while I was driving and luckily I was only 1 light and 1 right turn away from being home otherwise I would have had to pull over until it passed.

Re: Do you get migraine auras . . .

I use to get them 4 or 5 times a year but without a migraine or even a minor headache.  My eye doctor called them optic migraines and said they were usually secondary syptoms of a migraine and that I was lucky not to have any other symptons.  I was getting them over a 20 year time period.  The bright floaters usually started in one eye and then went to the other eye and they did affect my vision.  The doctor told me to stop whatever I was doing at the time, go into a dark room and close my eyes.  They never lasted more than 15-20 minutes.  The strange thing is I haven't had one in the past 3 years - that's when I retired!  So my feeling is it was related to stress!!!
