When I had my TKR in November, 2012, I received two units of blood due to excessive bleeding right at the end of the surgery.

I am going to have my other TKR in June, and had two friends with the same blood type offer to be directed designated blood donors. So, I told my orthopedic surgeon that I had two friends offer to give blood and he said that this was not suggested. Research has shown that there is a higher chance of incompatibility in directed blood donations than if unknown donors were used.

It really surprised me.
