Re: Daughter needs NSAID but has stomach issues

You might want to look into the supplement, turmeric curcumin, it is suppose to help with inflammation issues.

Re: Daughter needs NSAID but has stomach issues

I have been taking a NSAID called Lodine (Edolac) for about 20 years. I have a reflux problem and also took Prilosec until recently when my doctor and I decided I should try an acid reducer instead. That is going so-so. I've never had any problems with the Lodine and it worked for me better than any other NSAID. I always take it with food. If I want my morning dose before I get up, I take a couple of Tums with it.

You might ask your doctor about Protonix. I've had stomach issues for a long time. OTCs did nothing for me but the Protonix has been a miracle for me. My Mom developed a 3-inch ulcer several years ago from Feldene which is an excellent anti-inflammatory but very hard on the stomach. Doctor gave her Protonix to use while ulcer healed. HTH

Re: Daughter needs NSAID but has stomach issues

I have problems with my pancreas. I can only take "Tylenol". In the early stages I took pain medication. My Dr put me on "Ativan" for pain when needed. I know this is a different situation but I do have stomach problems too.

I'm on a very strict diet, low fat and low sugar. Do any foods upset her stomach?

Re: Daughter needs NSAID but has stomach issues

My daughter has cyclic vomiting syndrome and could not take medications when she was sick because she would just throw it up. When she had a fever, I gave her acetominophen suppositories because that would bypass the stomach. They had to be ordered from the pharmacist because they didn't usually stock a strong enough dosage. Perhaps other medications now come in a suppository form. Since you are a nurse, do any of her medications come in injectable form? Perhaps that would help.

Hyacinth-I just realizes you were looking for a different stomach med. I take Lansoprazole (Prevacid) I've taken just about all the proton pump inhibitors and for me, this one is the best.

I was also wondering if some Carafate might help? Maybe taking it an hour before the NSAID?

Medical marajuna is working for many now days. I even might ask my Dr about it. I dont think it is covered by insurance. Comes in different forms.

Could this have been aggravated by her job - being on her feet for hours on end? That will often make knee or back problems flare up.

Has she had to quit?

I always admired her for sticking with that job for so long.

Really. What did her doctor suggest? She must have told her doctor about it.

Re: Daughter needs NSAID but has stomach issues

Whatever remedy has worked for one person may not work for someone else. That's why it's best if she discusses this in length with her doctor.

In fact, over-the-counter supplements can interact with prescription medications, and have an adverse reaction to each other, and make a bad problem even worse.
