Daughter needs NSAID but has stomach issues

My 27 year old daughter has just been diagnosed with spondylarthritis. This is a usually genetic disorder (my husband has rheumatoid arthritis) that comes from the spine.

Her knees are her main source of pain, however, her whole lower body hurts.

Many people get good results from NSAID medications (Celebrex, ibuprofen, naproxen, etc.)

She is very INTOLERANT of these medications due to stomach pain. She is currently on omeprazole for her stomach.

Wondering if anyone has had success with another stomach med that might help her to be able to tolerate these medications.

Otherwise, the treatment becomes more complex, even so far as to the meds used to treat rheumatoid arthritis.

I think she should ask her doctor.

Re: Daughter needs NSAID but has stomach issues

Does it help if she eats something first? I used to be able to take on an empty stomach but now I cannot. Maybe Turmeric would help with the inflammation. You can do a search on it online. I bought Andrew Lessman's to try because it does not have bioperine/black pepper in it which could upset the stomach. They say turmeric is not absorbed without the bioperine but Andrew Lessman made his so it would be absorbed. Can't remember what he said. He's on HSN this weekend maybe he will talk about it.

Hi hyacinth,

Though unable to help you with a stomach med, I'd suggest one resource: your local pharmacy. I have done this on a few occasions and it has been a positive experience for both me and the pharmacist.

Also, though another poster mentioned "food," I want to add my two bits. I have had chronic migraine since 1984 and it has been a challenge to find a medication that could successfully intervene. It took years and years, but I ended up taking the highest dose of Mobic possible (15mg once a day). Though no longer on this medication, when I took it, I took it after eating a major breakfast meal. One cannot take any medication where it is advised to take with food if that food equates to several crackers and a plum in mass.

The ibruprofen and naproxen are old meds and do not have the "design" factor to be easier on the stomach. Again, a consult with your local pharmacist, I believe, might be of assistance to you and your daughter.

God Bless - Rebecca

Thanks for absolutely nothing.

I am a registered nurse, and am more than aware of discussing this with her doctor.

If you are an RN then you should know there are many many many NSAID out there and a discussion with her doctor could yield her a Rx for one that causes less stomach irritation. For instance daypro does not upset the stomach.

It seems a 27 year old should be able to go and talk to her doctor about an issue without needing any help from her Mom.

Don't know if you have seen a rheumatologist or not. But humera or a immune blocker could work for her. I am going to be stArting it soon.

Hyacinth,

That is really a tough one. I have never been one that has had any GI problems when on even therapeutic does of Ibuprofen for several tendon and ligament problems. Most I took was 2400mg per day and that was for 3 months when I had Patella Tendonitis. Also when I was suffering several times with Achilles Tendonitis and/or Plantar Faciitis.

Also was on Celebrex for several years until my 2nd heart attack. I talked with my friend the Orthopod that had prescribed this for my arthritic riddled body, which the worst is mostly my fingers on both hands from the heavy lifting I did for close to 30 years. Had to lift reels of wire weighing between 55-80lbs using only the first 3 fingers on each hand. Lifted hundred of these every day.

After the 2nd heart attack and seeing Vioxx taken off the market I decided I did not want to risk any further heart damage if it could be avoided. My friend agreed and I dropped the Celebrex from my daily med regimen. There are days now that I cannot open my fingers without first running them under hot(warm)water for up to 10 minutes or soaking them in water of the same temp.

The only thing I know of that helps some is the Enteric Coated Aspirin which does not dissolve in the stomach. I know with these it takes longer to get relief but they are said to work for many without causing stomach distress. I am pretty sure they can be found in strengths up to 500mg.

I am not familiar with anything else that might help your daughter with this problem. Hopefully she is able to find something that will help her with this issue.

Check out PHENOCANE on Amazon. Read the reviews. It is a natural anti-inflammatory.

Fear not Brothers and Sisters! I have read THE BOOK..........we win!!!

Re: Daughter needs NSAID but has stomach issues

I have been around and around with this question with the orthopedic surgeon, pharmacist, and GI physician and have never found a solution.
