Melatonin gave me a hangover.  Weird.

According to WebMD you should never take more than 500 mg of magnesium.  It can cause rapid heartbeat and, I believe,  other heart irregularities.

@kze

I've tried melatonin and felt groggy the next day.  Didn't like the hangover feeling.

Also ... excessive amounts of magnesium can cause intestinal distress and sometimes diarrhea.

So  ... don't take excessive amounts, right?

Re: DOES MAGNESIUM HELP YOU SLEEP BETTER?

I take magnesium at night and it relaxes my muscles and helps me fall asleep, but I don't notice that I sleep better or longer.

There are several different types of magnesium, make sure you are taking the one that does what you want it to do.

Also magnesium and calcium should not be taken together.  It is suggested that calcium be taken in the morning and magnesium in the evening for optimal absorption of both.

Re: DOES MAGNESIUM HELP YOU SLEEP BETTER?

I take magnesium glycinate along with gaba and l-theanine. I have added Montmorency cherry since I have been diagnosed with arthritis in my knee. I take it all an hour before I head to bed. It has helped me immensely. I have been a bad sleeper years prior to this. My friend goes to a holistic doctor and together with her guidance and our research,we have come up with this mix.

I still have to get up several times in the night so it has helped me get back to sleep instead of my mind starting to race.

I was an avid melantonin users but it started to not help me at all.

Re: DOES MAGNESIUM HELP YOU SLEEP BETTER?

I've been using Nakery's body wash with magnesium.  Not sure if it's just in my head, but, yes, I feel that I sleep better.  Not sure how much or how little magnesium is in the body wash, but I save it for my nighttime shower.

Something strange regarding magnesium.  I accompanied my 82 y/o Mom to her cardiology appointment.  She has A-fib that is mostly managed well except for every now and then when she feels that her "chest is banging" at nighttime.  Cardiologist told her it's normal, and I asked if she could benefit from some magnesium.  Cardiologist said she could.  I asked which kind.  He said, "any."  I asked him to be specific because there are many kinds of magnesium.  He said, "oxide."  I asked about glycinate, and, again, he said "oxide."  At the pharmacy, I told this to the pharmacist who basically said, if the doctor said oxide, get oxide.  Told my Mom she needs glycinate, but she only wanted to listen to the doctor.  Two days of taking oxide, she said, "no more!"  Oxide, from what I've read, is for constipation!!  Shame on the cardiologist for not knowing his magnesiums.  I'm very disappointed.

Re: DOES MAGNESIUM HELP YOU SLEEP BETTER?

Have you tried GABA supplements? I take this supplements daily for better sleep, and I like its effect a lot. Melatonin didn't help me as well as magnesium complex before.

Re: DOES MAGNESIUM HELP YOU SLEEP BETTER?

Yes, magnesium helps me sleep better. Some friendly suggestions for those who feel that magnesium does not help them:

First, Magnesium oxide is very poorly absorbed, so read up on the better forms mentioned in this thread.

Second, Things like calcium and phytates (grains, seeds, nuts, and legumes) hinder magnesium absorption.

If a person takes calcium and magnesium and still has regular leg cramps, look into the possibility of calcium and magnesium being out of balance.

(I do not take calcium supplements but I consume eggs).

Third, Other vitamins, minerals and nutrients should be at balanced levels for magnesium to work most effectively. For example, potassium and B6.

Not medical advice. Just things I’ve learned.
