@Mom2Dogs wrote:Lately I have been hungry...a lot...it's odd beause I have never been a big eater nor do I overeat.
When I am hungry, I feel ill...I must eat something...tonight for dinner I ate 1/2 of a grilled cheese sandwich a few carrots and cucumber slices. I drank a glass of water as well.
At 9:00 I was hungry, I had to eat or I would not be able to sleep so I had two slices of toast, which I know bread is not the best when trying to watch food intake.
I'm looking for recommendations on what I can snack on when I
need to eat something. The idea is low calorie or low carb, I certainly do not want to gain weight. It would not hurt if I lost 8-10 lbs.
I am wondering if the premier protein shakes would be OK. I need to research the shakes, I am not sure of their sugar content. thanks
I must say ... I am truly baffled by your food choices ..... for dinner you had a half a sandwich, some vegetable slices and a glass of water .... and you wonder why you were hungry later? Really?
I don't know if you are trying to lose weight or just being careful .... but you definitely don't have enough protein intake!
BTW, yes, the Premier Protein shakes are excellent .... 30g of protein, for about 160 calories, and 1g sugar. I have one every day ... and sometimes I have two. There's a thread on the subject here in Wellness.

Perhaps having something more substantial like a 1/2 sandwich and a bowl of vegetable soup with the veggies as your snack. Instead of grilled cheese, try turkey. Soup can be very filling.

@Azcowgirl wrote:@Scooby Doo Cold really revs up my hunger too. Summer is much easier, I grab a cold diet root beer for a treat and it satisfies. When I'm hungry at night in the winter, I grab a sugar free hot chocolate, sometimes two. Still a challenge to maintain in winter for me. I agree about the Premiere protein shakes, they are good, and they also help satisfy.
What brand of sugar free hot chocolate do you use? I've been looking all over for one and not just no sugar addded.

If I wake up hungry during the night, I can't sleep. When that happens, I pour a half glass of milk. Then I'm able to fall back asleep.

Thanks for the replies, yes, I know 'dinner' was not much! I had a decent lunch and did not want to over do for dinner. Obviously it was not enough, but often when I have a filling lunch I don't want much dinner.
Many times in the evening, for dinner, I have an apple with cheese and a few crackers and I am fine, but lately I seem to be hungrier and then feel ill, so I have to eat more.
Like @AuntG I also wake up in the night and have a glass of milk to help me go back to sleep.

I don't think I'm a very good one to give advice right now as I am currently strugging with my weight and eating habits! But when I read your post, I thought to myself --- I don't think you ate nearly enough for your dinner and that is definitely why you were hungry! Eat a whole grilled cheese sandwich. Or add a nice hearty bowl of soup of some kind.

Definitely keep protein shakes on hand. My fave is Fairlife chocolate.
Apples, pears and lowfat Greek yogurt are also quick and easy items to have on hand as well as eggs- hard boiled , egg salad or any way you like to prepare them.
Ditch the bread unless you keep Ezekiel bread in the freezer for toast.
Drink water throughout the day. Sip as you go to keep hydrated. That helps keep hunger at bay.

1/2 a grilled cheese sandwich isn't enough of a dinner to hold you over. Depending on how big it was though. I often eat a "toasted" cheese sandwich but I use country wheat bread. It's more filling. So is a peanut butter sandwich. Oatmeal is very filling too and sticks with me. Yogurt is good before bed - I add 1/8 cup of Grape Nuts to it.

Sometimes just a handful of cashews or almonds takes away that hunger feeling when you just need...something!
Nuts are protein, and I find them satisfying.

Why only a 1/2 grilled cheese? You're not eating enough for the evening meal. Food only lasts in stomach for 4 hours. Not surprised you're hungry at bedtime.
