Lately I have been hungry...a lot...it's odd beause I have never been a big  eater nor do I overeat.

When I am hungry, I feel ill...I must eat something...tonight for dinner I ate 1/2 of a grilled cheese sandwich a few carrots and cucumber slices.  I drank a glass of water as well.

At 9:00 I was hungry, I had to eat or I would not be able to sleep so I had two slices of toast, which I know bread is not the best when trying to watch food intake.

I'm  looking for recommendations on what I can snack on when I

need to eat something.  The idea is low calorie or low carb, I certainly do not want to gain weight.  It would not hurt if I lost 8-10 lbs.

I am wondering if the premier protein shakes would be OK.  I need to research the shakes, I am not sure of their sugar content.  thanks

I think that's a good idea since those shakes only have 1 gram of sugar. I'm the same way with needing to eat when I get hungry or not feeling well and I keep these and the

protein bars on hand and it tastes like a dessert.

@GenXmuse   Hopefully my local grocery will have the protein shakes.  I like the idea they are so low in sugar.  Thanks.

Protein is what I need to curb my appetite and hold me over.

I'll have a handful of nuts, cheese, a couple of tablespoons of cottage cheese, a boiled egg.   Sometimes a cup of hot broth hits the spot.

The protein shakes are pretty good and they have some new flavors, but I gravitate to savory not sweet.

I have a hard time controlling my eating in the winter.  The dark, cold weather makes me want to eat and lounge, hibernate I suppose.

how about adding something to your dinner, but eating the carrots and cucumbers for your late night snack instead? That's what I did when I got hungry when I ate early dinners and got hungry before bed. I never gained weight eit, but felt full or content enough to last until morning.

I'm high carb, so might not much help, but this is my remedy.  I do keep a bowl full of crudities in the fridge; cukes, grape tomatoes, carrots, celery, cauliflower...whatever is available.  I make hummus oil free with lemon, garlic, garbanzo, and a heavy sprinkling of smoked paprika.  It is filling and healthy.  I sometimes make a plate full of steamed broccoli (or any veggies) if I'm hungry for the same reason....low cal yet healthy, my priority.  I eat fresh fruit if I'm hungry later in the day,  Good luck to you.

For me, it is a choice.  What are my priorities...if I'm stressed that is causing overeating ....am I practicing strategies to ameliorate the stress.  Your mind is your most powerful tool when changing a lifestyle.

Best of health to you!

@Scooby Doo  Cold really revs up my hunger too. Summer is much easier, I grab a cold diet root beer for a treat and it satisfies. When I'm hungry at night in the winter, I grab a sugar free hot chocolate, sometimes two. Still a challenge to maintain in winter for me. I agree about the Premiere protein shakes, they are good, and they also help satisfy.

Carrots are full of carbs.  When I eat them, I get hungry even though I know I shouldn't be. Years ago on a Weight Watchers we were told to eat carrots, but they made things worse for me.

I have flavored tea in my cupboards.  When I am looking for a snack and really know I should not be hungry, I make myself a cup of two..

Usually, I make orange, raspberry or some other sweet tasting tea.  It usually takes care of my cravings....with zero calorie intake.

@phoenixbrd

You first 3 words describe my way of eating. I get all the protein I need to function at a high physical level. Is that because of my protein intake?

Absolutely not! It is because at least 85% of the fuel for my body, comes from complex carbohydrates, and has through my 40's to my present 82 years.

I have not heard of "well people" getting ill when they are hungry. That is a new one to me. Many with serious gastro problems, I understand, but others! The mind works in strange ways, but as you say, "your most powerful tool". Listen to what it is really telling you, moreso if you are one that knows your own body intimately.

Stay well and my best you,

@Mom2Dogs  Sometimes when I get hungry before bed, I'll have a tablespoon of salsa that I use to dip peeled cucumber wheels into. Very low calorie and refreshing. Hits the spot and curbs the appetite not to eat junk instead.

Sometimes two or three bottles of water help too.
