Re: Constipation stemming from medication - suggestions, please

I always thought rice was binding and should be used for the opposite bowel problem.

I am lucky in that I am lactose intolerant. All I have to do to solve the constipation problem is eat some dairy.

However, most of the time I use Miralax, which is gentle and not painful.

Stool softeners are good. Also drink lots of water. Raisins work for me.

Rice is like the banana. Used a certain way (I.e green bananas or white rice w/out liquids), it can be constipating. Used another way (very ripe bananas, brown rice w/ lots of fiber & adequately hydrated), it can RELIEVE constipation. If you only had to do one thing...drink water! We are so dehydrated w/out knowing. Fill the tank!

Unfortunately, I have had a life long problem with this issue. I now take a prescription med for this (Linzess). You could try Miralax in combination with a Senna type tea. This type of tea is available at the grocery store, usually described as Laxative, Detox, or even Slimming. Check for Senna as main ingredient. I would suggest drinking a few cups a day. I find this to be key in getting my system moving and without painful cramps. Good luck.

I mix in a TBSP or two of whole flax seeds to something I'm eating every day. It can be soup, yoghurt, or your entree. I go every day, like clockwork, and there's the added benefit of Omega nutrients in the flax seeds.

Fleet Enema Saline Laxative should give you relief. It is pre-measured in a nozzled squeeze bottle. Very easy to use. It worked for my daughter when she was so miserable with the pressure of needing to go but couldn't.

Re: Constipation stemming from medication - suggestions, please

I know exactly how to help the OP. My daughter has had 5children and the other daughter been pregnant 6 times.

They didn't have this when I was young and pregnant. This stuff will work and the reason I mentioned the pregnancy is because they were having 'issues' as often pregnant women do and their GYN recommended this so it is safe.

MiraLax it is amazing. It might take a day or two for it to work, but it will work. Don't loose hope. Follow the directions.

Then when you do that at different times (you are going to think I'm crazy but trust me this will work). Don't listen to the naysayers. Go to the grocery store and get you some chips (I usually eat "Pringles" original FAT FREE Potato chips. They have Olestra in them. You need the Olestra. It will make you go.

Remember back with that Diet pill that the fDA approved and everyone made fun of it because the ingredient made you have loose b*owels? That was because that ingredient "Olestra" will do that. It is safe (it is in almost all FAT Free products. Anything that says "50% fewer calories, that has Olestra.

When you do get your b*owels straightened out just every few days (don't let it get away from you because it will (the con sti pation) will, just eat some of the chips (it doesn't have to be Pringles, that's what I eat) and drink some of the MiraLax at night every few nights.

The Dr says it is safe to use (better than any of the other things). You won't cramp or anything. You won't even realize it. I guarantee you it works and you will be a happy camper again.

I had to do something because most of the medicine I take caused my mouth to get so dry I now have to take medicine that increases the salava (moisture) in my mouth to increase. If you want to know the name of the prescription I can give it to you.

Even my dentist told his Uncle about the prescription medicine and it has helped him tremendously. People don't know but that will totally make your teeth rotten.

I never had a cavity in my mouth then I went about 1 1/2 years before I got my teeth cleaned. Before that I went every 6 months to the dentist. My dentist got a divorce and it cleaned out his bank account. He closed up shop. I suddenly realized I hadn't been to the dentist and I thought I had receeding gums.

I found a wonderful dentist. Long story short. Almost every tooth in my mouth is rotten. I have had so many root canals I've lost count. I still own my dear dentist $7,000 ! I have to go again tomorrow to have a cap put on a root canal I had done a few weeks ago. (The fun never ends).

Please do not let the dry mouth go on. Let me know if you want the name of the prescription. You know which one of my Drs gave me the prescription? It was the arthritis Dr. she is amazing also. My Drs have taken such good care of me. I have a lot of little weird things wrong with me.

If you want to know the name of the prescription. Put up something like as subject: To Annabelle bla bla (let me know what you want). I don't get on here every day.

If you can believe it, within the past few days I found out I tore my retina (my best friend did the same thing). I've been told it comes with age!

So I might not be doing a lot of reading for a few days. Don't give up on me. I really want to help you as we have to stick together and help each other.

Take care and I understand and am glad you came to all of us.

Take a magnesium supplement and have a greek yogurt every day. And be sure you drink enough water (that'll really help constipation) and eat enough fiber.
