Re: Constipation stemming from medication - suggestions, please

Miralax, It adds water to the bowel . If this is a ongoing problem, I would eat oatmeal with flax and dryed fruit for breakfast with lots of water. Not only will your cholesterol go down, things will move though you better. Miralax like other things will stop working if used ongoing.

Several years ago, my husband had a morphine pump implanted for serious chronic pain....his doctor recommended he take a little bit of mineral oil daily....they make a tasteless kind that really doesn't have any taste to it.

I just had my 3rd back surgery on the 3rd of April and I experienced that.. The doctor told me to take Colace, OTC medication, and it did work... but it does hurt when it starts working... But it does the trick... hope this helps.

I do not add any ice because the frozen banana creates a consistency of soft serve ice cream. I use my food processor and I cannot use ice in there. My cranberries are frozen, as I always stock up at Thanksgiving time; and I am almost out now.

I was going to suggest magnesium pills, but if the MOM is not working, doubt they will. Try taking 3 stool softeners every evening with a full glass of water. You try the Walmart Equate brand, the ones that also contain a mild laxative in them.

Colace is only a stool softener versus a laxative. Pericolace is a laxative.

AngelPuppy, for long term regularity, I sincerely recommend Benefiber. I used to joke that I digested food like a snake, you know, take days to process Wink. I went for a colonoscopy when I was 45 (no problems, just early test because of family history) and I happened to mention to the GI doctor that my family was concerned because I didn't have the same 'constitutional' schedule like them. Anyways - GI guy says he takes Benefiber daily. I have taken Benefiber daily for nearly 7 years now. What I love about this product is that you can add it to almost anything and not taste it. Almost anything means - avoid really cold food or drink, like ice water, ice cream etc. I sprinkle some in my morning coffee. My elderly mom was on much medication and she liked her benefiber in a cup of tee or sprinkled on some food. As long as you drink plenty of fluids during the day, you will have a pleasant experience - no bloating, pains or anything.

If your doctor prescribed the medication for nausea then I would call his office and ask them. I remember when I took medication for nausea due to chemo the name of the laxative was on a paper from the doctor's office but I don't remember what it was.

Drink at least 1/2 your body weight in ounces (160lb = 80 ounces).

Eat TONS of lettuce/salad. Eat 1 of those family packs of lettuce & chow down. Little or no dressing...even straight from the bag. And drink lots of water.

Eat 3 large oranges every night before going to bed. And drink lots of water.

Eat 2-3 cups of brown rice. And drink lots of water.

Oh, and drink lots of water. Smiley Happy

Hope you see the common theme here. No Meds. No OTC. No Prescriptions. Let Food be your medicine. Your body can heal w/ the proper food. So easy. So cheap. So logical. Seriously....eat 3 cups of brown rice & just wait for the magic to happen.

ETA: You mentioned being nauseous & here I'm recommending food...if you can choke down MOM & other OTC recommendations, a little orange or cup of rice doesn't seem so bad, yes?
