Re: Concept2 Indoor Rowing: Do you row?

On 8/25/2014 birkin baby said: Yes,I row . My bosses are both youth rowing coaches and went to nationals this year. They also row and just returned from a competition in France. They let me bring home a concept 2 last summer and taught me how to row. I am hooked. It is a fantastic workout.I can binge watch tv on dvd while getting my row on. I don't row on water. They take their dogs in the coaches boat...lol.

Wow...you've got the real deal, as well! My gym has a row of machines facing the outside, so no TV watching. Smiley Sad. I like to use rowing as an endurance/aerobic piece versus an anaerobic interval (I'm much stronger on the bike...more watts), but the monitor taunts me with 500m splits & before you know it, I'm 'balls to the walls' out of my aerobic range. Shame on you, Sidsmom!!!

Check out the online journal & 'race' with international rowers within your age/weight range. I KNOW you have the instruction down pat...Rock it!!! Report back with your training routines!

I get a good workout by rowing in the lake. The hard part is getting it out of the water.

Oh, brew....I'm a fan of your work, so I'll say...."is it hard to get out of the boat because you have a drink in your hand??!"!! Smiley Very Happy Wow...so you do the outside row, as well. Harder, I would imagine, yes?! You're the Real Deal, as well. Impressed.

Re: Concept2 Indoor Rowing: Do you row?

This is fun. I have a Integrity Air 3000 ergonomic rowing machine (erg) at my house. It is amazing. I love the "fan" feature. Everyone that gets on it just loves it. We have had it for awhile but it still works amazingly well. Rows smooth as silk.

My daughter was on her high school crew team. She rowed for four years and after graduation, wanted to keep it up and she bought the erg. She has beautiful shoulders and upper back from years of rowing.

I prefer to run and bicycle outdoors (we also kayak when we can), and lift light weights for my arms, but I do like to hop on it now and again for cross training and for a little upper body toning. It's fun.

"Row, row,row your boat!" Sounds like your daughter can be the best coach around!! Do you row to music? What's your favorite playlist?

We usually just row to the TV screen these days, lol (although the fan is a bit noisy). I'm usually counting in my head too, although it does have a counter on it.

I really loved it, but there was a big learning curve, especially since I was only one of two newbies. :-0 I really struggle to get in cardio (except spin -- I LOVE spin!!!!), so this might be good for me to start doing. Easier on my joints than running (which I basically hate, anyway!) Thanks for the inspiration! They have rowers at the gym, not sure what kind they are. I just need to get after it!

FUTURE: I'm thinking of starting a Spinning™ thread so we can all regroup & check in where we're @ with our training. Tomorrow..promise!

WAIT A MINUTE...I totally passed this....you were on a COMPETITIVE team???! Girl, I want to listen to everything you have to share. SPILL!!! Any tricks/tips to better my split??! You are the REAL deal!!

Oh, girl......I am soooooooo NOT the real deal. I loved it, but I wasn't great. Smiley Wink A lot of it was focused on teamwork, synchronizing our strokes, etc, so VERY different than ind. rowing. It's been several (5?) years, so I'm beyond rusty. LOL!! We did very little for time (they did time us, but I was busy keeping track of other things, and didn't have much with which I could compare), so I mainly just did it for exercise, to get outdoors, and fun. It was a big corporate league, and there were actually quite a few people who rowed in college, etc. I was WAY out of my league, but it was a great experience! As for spin, I go 2-3 times a week. Would love to go more, but it's kind of hard with my work schedule, and I try to incorporate walking, Pilates, and weights in, as well!

I have been rowing for a few years now. My trainer uses it extensively in his CrossFit classes and my private sessions too.

Just last Thursday we alternated 500 meters (it didn't count until I got below 2:00 - right at 1:57-1:59) with 10 deadlifts of 95 pounds. I did 10 sets total.

He went online today and looked up times for 60 year old women - I'm doing pretty well and I never would have believed it until you got me curious to check! In the next week we will see how fast I can sprint 500 once.

I'm happy to have inspired you!! This could be a new terrier3 thing!! Just like Kettlebells & rowing, my trainer & I knew about this YEARS ago...especially when Crossfit was JUST starting....and was an online only thing. I'm so thankful I have that instruction...he's amazing!! He's taught be SOOOOO much!!!! I'm just happy I can pass this on to you!!

I would love to online compete w/ you, but I'm over 135lbs which puts me in the heavyweight class. Darn!! Report back with your AVG/500m times!! I expect good things out of you...promise??! If you're in the NE, there's probably TONS of Sprint racing since crew is huge in the NE. I WANT YOU YO BE A WORLD RECORDHOLDER!! Can you do it??! I think SO!! Report back!

I'm heavyweight class too - but remember I also just turned 60, so that puts me in the 60-69 group.

I only like to compete against myself!

Matt, my trainer, was going to put my name in the program he was looking at...I am going to do 500 sprints today on my own.

My average (10 sprints alternating with 10 sets of deadlifts deadlifts) was under 2:00, because he didn't start the 500 until I got BELOW 2:00 and I had to KEEP BELOW 2:00 to have the 500 count...I stayed just below 1:58, to make sure a stroke wouldn't put me over! If I went over, I had to start again from scratch. I didn't want that to happen, obviously. It was a VERY strenuous workout!

Re: Concept2 Indoor Rowing: Do you row?

Is there much of a learning curve to using a rowing machine? My son and it have been talking about getting a rower but it is a very big investment especially if it doesn't get used much.

You're spot on...it is a big investment. Learning curve? A little bit, but since you are the 'motor', maintaining your desired intensity takes focus & time to get a good workout.

I'm a big proponent of gym/fitness centers/YMCA type facilities. If you have one in your area, there's a very good chance a rower is available...as well as many different types of fitness equipment if rowing doesn't tickle your fancy that day! If you don't & you choose to purchase a rower, there are many different videos online to show how to row for the greatest intensity & efficiency. A good machine (Concept2) would last many, many years.
