For thd last few procedures/colonoscopy or Double Balloon Enteroscopy, I used both "GoLytely and/or NuLytely for the prep.New name, same viscosity and feel going dpwn. Guess the makerbgavr some thoughf to the oxymoron comments.

What she probably felt was them shooting some compressed air into her colon to "fluf" it up and get the wrinkles and creases out. It can really hurt which is why they put you to sleep. I've been pretty much fully awake for several colonoscopies and found this to be most uncomfortable. Now I talk to whoever is doing the anesthesia and make sure I'm fully "under". No reason to avoid a colonoscopy that could save your life when a little communication is all that is necessary. Oh, and you far*t that air for hours afterwards.

Thanks everyone for posting your experiences about this, both good and bad. I'm overdue for my colonoscopy and have delayed for various reasons, illnesses and deaths in the family, etc. But I know I HAVE to get it done.

The prep the last time was horrible for me, but your posts make me think that maybe it won't be so bad due to different protocols available now. I'm going to call my doctor's office first thing Monday and find out what they use now. Polady, please come back after your test and let us know how the pills worked!

When I had my last one, I had had a hysterectomy years before, and I was not totally asleep at the beginning of the procedure. I felt some pain and told the doctor... he said he was working around some scar tissue from my previous hysterectomy. They gave me more valium (that's what they used then) and I was fine. I remember seeing my colon on the screen and the nurse saying "you're clean as a whistle"!

The odd thing was, prior to the colonoscopy, I had had very, very bad bouts with IBS, pain so bad sometimes I felt like someone was running a knife around inside my abdomen. But after that procedure, I have only had a problem like that a few times in over ten years. I think maybe that scar tissue had been blocking something and he accidentally straightened it out! So my colonoscopy not only gave me good test results, it pretty much cured my IBS!

People are such babies! What is the big deal to eat and drink clear liquid things for a day and take that cleansing solution, just chill it. Both my DH and I had it done and no big deal. Guess we are lucky to have an excellent doctor to perform the procedure ,but I also made sure we had delicious home made chicken broth and yummy jellos. So you go to the bathroom more often and I also washed myself rather than wipe and used Vaseline , so I never had any discomfort. It saves lives for Pete sake!

About flex sig, done in lieu of colonoscopy. Those who say it serves no purposes are certainly not qualified to make that blanket statement and do not know why this procedure is sometimes done. If you don't have as doctor or one not qualified to address this, go to WebMD or some qualified website.

Kzeks, many of us are terrified of dying. I am always worried about disease, but I think the far worst one is ALS. I do worry about colon cancer, but not as much as ALS. I also have a bad back and never thought about the possibility of a tumor. I always attributed it to a disc.

Presumptuous much? I haven't seen any indication here that anyone considers their doctors inadequate to discuss or do their procedure.

And I never cease to be amazed at the people who come here to complain about what other posters choose to talk about. Why would you care? And after all, YOU are talking about the subject, too.

If you don't want to read about bowel movements, why on earth would you open a thread entitled "Colonoscopy Prep" and talk about them?... puleez!

I have never had the test....refused...don't want to go through all that prep....but I do believe the red foods would confuse the test with blood....

If you google "problems with colonoscopies", you will see many other possible issues with them. I'm certainly not saying they do not save lives, but I'm saying there are issues with perforated colons and infections.
