If you consider your doctor and his office inadequate to discuss this procedure, please do not let him/her perform it because they are definitely not qualified if they don't know more than a fashion forum.
About flex sig, done in lieu of colonoscopy. Those who say it serves no purposes are certainly not qualified to make that blanket statement and do not know why this procedure is sometimes done. If you don't have as doctor or one not qualified to address this, go to WebMD or some qualified website.
Presumptuous much? I haven't seen any indication here that anyone considers their doctors inadequate to discuss or do their procedure.
And I never cease to be amazed at the people who come here to complain about what other posters choose to talk about. Why would you care? And after all, YOU are talking about the subject, too.
If you don't want to read about bowel movements, why on earth would you open a thread entitled "Colonoscopy Prep" and talk about them?... puleez!

Just a side note from my personal experience. I knew a brilliant man who was a chemist by profession. He was so concerned about germs in medical equipment that he insisted on being the first patient of the day for any medical or dental procedure to minimize what he saw as the risk of contaminated equipment. He died in a car accident. Quite young too.

Well, for one (the OP) am glad and thank each and everyone of you for opening up my thread-
I know there are no subjects on these forums without some controversy
I have benefitted from your personal experiences- thank you!

I just had a colonscopy yesterday. The prep was the hardest part, mainly because I like to eat! My doctor gave me a really complete set of instructions about what and what not to eat starting 3 days before the procedure, and also a liquid diet plan. I just followed the instructions given. The lax prep was easy to take, just tasted like slightly salty water, and was very easy on my body.
I'm 70 and this is such an important test. I am cancer free and didn't have any polyps. The test only took about 15 minutes and I was given photos of my squeaky clean colon!

Too bad they can't come up with something to make the prep less difficult!

They wanted me to use the go lytely but I couldn't tolerate it. I mixed the Miralax with white grape juice and made sure it was cold. You can mix it with other things. Don't forget about using Vaseline. It really helps to keep your bum less sore:-).Communication with your doctor is key.If you want to be out let him know. I was out for my first procedure because I had my colonoscopy and endoscopy at the same time. Didn't remember anything. My last colonoscopy went well also. This test is so important!. I have taken care of patients with colon cancer. Its a horrible cancer. All cancers are. Good luck. Don't be afraid to ask your doctor questions. They are working for you :-)Thanks everyone for posting your experiences about this, both good and bad. I'm overdue for my colonoscopy and have delayed for various reasons, illnesses and deaths in the family, etc. But I know I HAVE to get it done.
The prep the last time was horrible for me, but your posts make me think that maybe it won't be so bad due to different protocols available now. I'm going to call my doctor's office first thing Monday and find out what they use now. Polady, please come back after your test and let us know how the pills worked!
When I had my last one, I had had a hysterectomy years before, and I was not totally asleep at the beginning of the procedure. I felt some pain and told the doctor... he said he was working around some scar tissue from my previous hysterectomy. They gave me more valium (that's what they used then) and I was fine. I remember seeing my colon on the screen and the nurse saying "you're clean as a whistle"!
The odd thing was, prior to the colonoscopy, I had had very, very bad bouts with IBS, pain so bad sometimes I felt like someone was running a knife around inside my abdomen. But after that procedure, I have only had a problem like that a few times in over ten years. I think maybe that scar tissue had been blocking something and he accidentally straightened it out! So my colonoscopy not only gave me good test results, it pretty much cured my IBS!

My advice if your GI tract is slow-moving start the actual PREP part earlier!!!I had my 2nd colonoscopy last Spring and per MD Rx mixed a full bottle of Miralax with Gatorade, started that at noon (way too sweet). Then doctor's instructions had me taking 4 Dulcolax pills at 3:00 PM; well at midnight I was still in the can and even the next morning at the hospital had to use the restroom and the output was not clear. I was in the waiting room and had to use the restroom off the waiting room, unreal cramps.
The doctor used Versed and Fentanyl for sedation and I was soo knocked out for 2 days. Even in the hospital I was in recovery for 2 hours. They say to not sign anything, make important decisions and even drive a car for 24-48 hours post-procedure. I could not drive that day plus two days after.
