Abreva works really fast for me. I keep it on hand and use it as soon as I feel that tingle.

I use the old fashioned standby. Gargle with warm saltwater 4x a day.

Melaluca tea tree oil and essential oil of lavender (lavendula) topically several times a day will clear up anything. Just a drop each on the end of a qtip and apply after every meal and before bed.

I've had cold sores my whole life and the only thing that has been effective is Abreva. I carry it in my purse always. If I start to feel a tingle , I start applying it. It greatly reduces the spread and heals the blisters in a few days, rather than weeks.

Even though yours is in full eruption, I still recommend it. You can pick it up at any drugstore for about $20.

if you have any vodka in the house it works well on cold sores.....just take a bit and dip a q-tip in it and apply.

i also think carmex is a great product to always carry around.

Good idea with the vodka....DH drinks it however...so NO cold sores for him!

I always had problems with cold sores. As soon as I feel one coming on I use alcohol applied with a q tip and continue until I know longer feel it. I have tried all the over the counter remedies and some prescriptions and none of them worked. Since I have used the alcohol I seldom get them.

I've suffered with getting cold sores since I was like 3. I tried Valtrex when it first came out and OMG. I take 1,000mg as soon as I feel it coming on and it never amounts to anything. I know it's prescription, but it cost me $5 with my copay. I wish that drug was around when I was in high school. I would get huge ones, and so embarrassing. I'm telling you there's no other drug like it. Zovirax was ok till this came out, but with Zovirax you have to take a lot more pills in a days time. It's the best $5 I've ever spent!!

When this nasty virus activates in my body, it is not unusual for me to develop multiple blisters, which the oral medication takes care of. I don't waste my time with anything other than the prescription stuff.

or Valtrex.
