I love bread. I miss bread. But I don't miss the extra weight and sluggishness. Bread does indeed, fatten us up. That is coming from my doctor and he was right. I watch sugar too.

Most cultures have had some form of a leavened/unleavened grain based food since the beginning of civilization. Pita, Naan, Matzo, Tortilla, Noodles, Pasta, etc. If anyone is having health problems from eating store bought, white bread, maybe they should try another form. There are a lot of choices. And use common sense as to portion control.

Bread does not you fat. Not taking any physical exercise, eating a diet of high caloric processed foods, and overeating will make you fat.

Thank you.

I am beginning to wonder, too. Since using primarily gluten-free bread and dropping all cereals from my diet, I have experienced some improvements with several health issues. However, to improve even more, I must drop sugar, and that one is extremely difficult for me to embrace. (Love my 85 percent cacao.)

The odd thing is that I really like the taste of Rudi gluten-free bread.

If it were "so simple" I wouldn't have been 100 pounds overweight for 50 years, and I'd still be eating bread!

I agree, Violann, I am hypothroid, and have taken steroids for 32 yrs. and my metabolism can not tolerate lots of bread or high carb grains. I like quinoa and not very often I have steel cut oats. It is important to realize some just do not need bread!

Bread made with starter, not yeast, and organic whole grains and seeds is 100% different from grocery store bread. Many people who seem to feel badly when they eat bread and attribute that to gluten do fine when they eat bread made with starter. It is similar to eating fermented foods and is digested differently. Baguettes, levain, are all delicious and are "the staff of life" because the starter increases their digestibility.

Anything made with white flour and sugar is bad for you.. Even most whole wheat bread isn't the greatest for you. That said, I have not given up bread. When I want toast or a sandwich I eat multigrain bread (sprouted if possible) that has added fiber. When I want a bagel I buy low carb bagels - 10-20 carbs instead of 50-60 for a regular bagel. Other than that, as I am diabetic I try not to eat much bread, but I have an occasional hot dog or burger with a bun. I'm fine with that. Everything in moderation.
