Try Voltaren, OTC.  It helps my arthritic knees.

@Jrzgirl

Gret drug for arthritics.  I can rarely take it for bleeding issues but I can use the "ointment" to rub on my arthritic areas.  It works wonders, believe it or not.  That way it doesn't have to pass my gullet to give me relief.  If you have any issues with GI bleeding or not, get that.  Sometimes you can use that in between.  I have both and when it is so bad I can't bear it any longer, I take the oral kind and other times I use the rub-on.

Years ago my doc prescribed Voltaren which I picked up at the pharmacy.  When I got home I researched it and read it can be toxic to cats and some other animals.  If they lick your skin or the hands after applying and before washing, that would be dangerous.

I never tried it.

It will burn your eyes too and any medication you take p.o. would be toxic to animals, because it is all based on size/weight. Animals are much smaller and weigh less.  If you use gloves to apply and throw them away afterward, I hardly see how it could be toxic.

@Tinkrbl44 I was at physio last week for nerve pain and inflammation .  Heat for 15 minutes was recommended.  It helps.  I thought it was counterintuitive as well but I was wrong.

    @SharkE.  Drugs and not the OTC stuff.  Go to a doctor, preferably a rheumatologist, describe the problem and ask for a drug that will actually help.  Hopefully he'll prescribe one of the NSAIDs.

    Rheumatism is the old fashioned name for osteoarthritis.  Nobody calls it that anymore

    Why go to a Rheumatologist if Rheumatold arthritis has alreafy been ruled out? I have osteoarthritis. I've been to a Rheumatologist to rule out rheumatoid arthritis. I do not have that and was told I didn't  need to see her.
I take meloxicam rx. Some days I take Bayer back and body asparin. I also take Collagen, U C collagen, tart cherry and Andrew Lessman's Tumaric(1600mg). I find the Tumeric really helps me. Some days taking a diuretic also helps me. That and trying to stay on an anti inflammatory diet. For topical treatments, I use, J.R. Watkins white cream liniment. It's contains camphor and turpentine oil. Two things I remember my dad using on his hands, years ago for his "rheumatism!"😅 I also use Hempvana. I find both of these to be effective. I have bone on bone arthritis in my knees. Today, the weather is cooler and dry and my body does not ache. On humid days I can barely move and sometimes am in tears 😢 from the pain. I'm one of those who feels better with the cold!🥶 I'm always praying for snow!❄️☃️  I visited my Aunt in Alaska one summer and I remember there being no humidity. I often say I'm going to move there! 😄I showed my young orthopedic doctor my white liniment, and of course, he never heard of it. Lol! 😅 Heck, we once had a conversation about mercurochrome and he'd never heard of that either!😂 When I first got arthritis in my hand, it was just my right middle finger. I thought it was broken and so did the doctor. After an x-ray, it was found to be arthritis. I now have it in both hands, wrist(along with a benign tumor, enchondroma, caused by arthritis)neck, spine, ankles, knees, hips, just all over. I hope you can get some relief. Believe me, I feel your pain!😊

One of my Dr.s told me to use Voltaren..then he said make sure DH wear gloves to put it on my back..He has a heart issue and it would absorb into his skin..which is a No-No for his heart..Didn't use it.

Be very careful with Voltaren, it will raise your BP.  My DH has arthritic hands, he gets much relief from Boiron Arnica Cream for Arthritis. Also takes UC Collagen II, one 40 mg cap daily.

@Starpolisher.  You need to educate yourself on what patients rheumatologist treat.  Do you really think they have a medical speciality to treat only one disease?  They see patients with various autoimmune diseases as well as arthritis.  Maybe yours didn't think you had arthritis.  I have no idea why she'd send you away

I went to this doctor as per my pcp's referral;

Halyna Kuzyshyn, MD

Rheumatology,

OVERVIEW

Dr. Kuzyshyn works in, NJ and specializes in Rheumatology.

I  guess she sent me away because she prefers to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis patients only, which I do not have.

A normal, healthy amount of rheumatoid factor is less than 20 units per milliliter (<20 U/mL).Jan 18, 2024

My results were:

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA) are both types of arthritis that cause joint pain. However, they have different causes, symptoms, and treatments.
I've had many x-rays in various parts of my body that show Osteoarthritis.
As far as, educating myself. I was a nurse for 23 years before becoming and retiring from teaching for 26 years. I still have my nursing  license. I understand very well what's going on. Thank you.
