@sophiamarie. I have two wisdom teeth one with a crown, one with a crown then a root canal.  I kept my wisdom teeth as they came in straight.  So yes, wisdom teeth are root canaled if you choose to keep them.

I have had problems with my teeth all my life. It started when I was ten. An eye tooth abbessed and had to be pulled. Had one tooth on the plate. Had terrible pain and a lump in my throat. Two infected teeth. Had them pulled. Three teeth on the plate. There's more but you get the picture. Have one brother and his teeth are fine. Mom bad teeth Dad good teeth???

@dex  Two hours??! Wow. That is a long cleaning. Why is it painful? Why so long?  Can't they give you something to relax you and make it easier for you?  I am so sorry to hear that you dread going and it is painful☹️

Root canals are almost always temporary.  I had three and all of them failed within a year and the tooth had to be extracted. Best bet is to have them pulled in the first place and have a bridge put in.  It's less expensive when you consider you'll have to have it done in the near future anyway, since root canals are not cheap.

My mom has had to have many root canals and two bridges over the years due to an accident in her youth that caused a lot of damage to her jaw and teeth. She's 77 and has only had to have one tooth removed in her adult life. (She lost one in the accident when she was a kid but did have her adult teeth in.) The rest have all be saved by the root canals seem to have worked for her.

Have an appointment at 1PM  to  look at my aching tooth.  I think it is the tooth he root canaled last vist 7 months ago or so.... OR  it might be the tooth next to it.  Hard to tell the way the pain radiates and moves around my jaw.  It is MISERABLE. Last night I was in pain all night even with tylenol.  The pain  comes and goes....in  waves  like  being in labor.  ....  It  has been bothering me the last 6 months off and on so I babied  it for hoping it would go away.  Of course it  doesnt.... wishful thinking.  Thank goodness they got me in today to Take care of it.    The pain is just MISERY!!!!!!

Oh I feel for you!!  I know just how awful a bad infected toothache can be!  I've had similar issues with a root canal going bad over the last few years and it's not always the same tooth. Sometimes it's hard to tell which tooth it is.

After a round of antibiotics which takes 3 days or so to bring relief I have considered having the tooth extracted and getting an implant....more expense & misery but I can't have this keep happening.

One thing that I found to help keep the infection at bay (once it's been cleared with antibiotics) is to swish olive leaf extract (it's a liquid and considered a natural antibiotic) around in my mouth several times a week.  Just recently I felt the twinges of a new infection possibly coming on so I took a sterile cotton ball soaked it in the olive leaf extract & placed it on the tooth & gum around it for several hours.  It worked like a charm!  For now I will keep doing this and I hope for the best.

I hope you find relief soon!
