Hi my friend @sfnative, short term memory for me??? Is it Rebecca?

You are talking about several of my long term issues, but! You are using medical jargon that is beyond my knowledge. Just to refresh: My very first(asymptomatic) Endoscopy showed this: GERD/Hiatal Hernia/Inflamed Esophagus/Barrett's Esophagus.

That led to an Endo every 3 months for 2 years, to every 6 months for 3 years, and still annually. Nexium, so far is keeping the Barrett's kinda at bay.

Why no symptoms? Might be because I have slept in a recliner since the early 1990's, not sure nor are my several Gastro Docs. Still taking Generic Nexium.

My colon? 15 Colonoscopies and 5 Double Balloon Enteroscopies. Throw in 6 Sleep Studies, for Pulmonary and Esophageal reasons. Of those 3 showed GERD, 3 showed no GERD.

In my many decades of running/hockey/referee, and speed skating, I never eat hours before training and little afterwards, be it training or competing. My main interest is replenishing my electrolytes, I do not need food.

My recliner sleeping was/is because of my spinal issues: Surgery to remove L-5/S-1, and again for ruptured L-3. My Spinal Specialist friend says "if it works for you, do it".  No old age stiffness or lack of flexibility when waking and getting upright.

I think you know that I haven't eaten "meals" for many ages. Pretty much all grazing for me, so no issues with my position at any time, reclining/inverting, or riding 1 of my recumbents for over an hour.

Make what little sense you can of this post my friend as it is all over the place. Just wanted to chime in on this Acid Reflux issue and maybe some that have it bad? Hey! A great Recliner, what'cha got to lose?

My very best to you,

JOhn

This is just a suggestion, if anyone wants to try it. Probiotics was recommended to me, as a way, to help control digestive issues

I have taken them, for about a month now, and it has made a huge difference for me. It isn't expensive, and can't hurt you. Check with your Dr

Another thing....we purchased a adjustable bed (split king) since we both have "issues" that putting the head of the bed up some helps.  Hubby has the reflx (due to hiatial hernia which I forgot to mention I think) and mine from vertigo attacks.  I can simply roll over in bed and there it is....I find sleeping with the head raised some (few inches) helps me.

@cherryHi!  my husband's doctor just put him on Align probiotics....he's been taking for a few weeks now so far he doesn't notice any changes.  But he doesn't get reflux real often...he has more trouble with constipation lately....so doctor told him to take them.

Do you take a certain brand?  I thought these Align brand were pretty expensive but Costco had them much cheaper.

Yes I do @tsavorite I take a product called Goodbelly. It is located in the juice section of the grocery store. I started with the juice which has  30 billion probiotics in a carton. A carton goes for 4 days, and you need to take it for 12 days, to reboot your digestive system

I have switched over to what they call shots, because, it has less carbs in it.It also has vitamins ,and you take it the same way. I shot each day. The shots contain 50 billion probiotics ,in each carton ,of 4 shots

Hi John,

Yes, it's Rebecca!  At least that hasn't changed!

I must apologized if I got all clinical in language.  I really musn't do that, but sometimes forget.  Hope you were able to get the gist of what I was trying to say.

Ah, yes, recliners.  I recall that I asked for your advice prior to my L5-S1 fusion w/hardware in 2012 and you immediately recommended a recliner.  One was purchased based on my husband's "lowest possible price" dictum.  Arrrrrrgh!  Well, it was and still is electric, which you said was absolutely necessary and I love that feature.  However, I will say to anyone out there who's reading this that this cheap recliner is literally in the process of falling apart and has been doing so for 3-4 years.  The wooden joints often go "clunk."  And the upholstery on the foot rest is flat as a pancake, so the wood under the fabric hurts my legs and feet.

That said, a recliner is totally awesome of anyone with acid reflux, GERD, whatever stomach ailment flares after you eat.  Just don't recline way back.

And, that reminds me that as soon as my foot and right arm heal, I need to call & schedule my endoscopy, which I had to cancel twice.

John, have you any experience with "stretch" injuries of tendons, ligaments, muscles and nerves (micro tears)?   I injured my right forearm, wrist and hand 3 consecutive days in a prolonged stretch motion carrying great weight sideways and on the 4th day severe pain set in.  The hand specialist I went to had a hard time believing me and I even had photos to show him what I was doing at the time.    If you have any thoughts, I'd appreciate them.  Thanks.

All the best to you, Cindy and your feline family.

Hi Rebecca

@sfnative ,

Sometime back I noticed a lump in the middle of my left leg quad. I was already seeing an Orthopod for my left big toe(which eventually needed surgery to remove), so I asked him what he thought about it.

He had a term(can't remember it), but said he would order an MRI to make sure. The MRI showed I had torn the upper part of that quad, and part of my hip flexor. Now I had been skating and it never had bothered me. When he showed me the MRI, I was shocked.

I could I have a tear like that and not even remember anything that might have caused it? I knew it was stiffer than my right quad when stretching, but being I am on a Statin, I know that compromises flexibility.

The quads take the biggest load when ice skating. That is where all the motion originates, and anyone that can skate well enough/hard enough, for long enough, knows which muscles are the first to go. That is why I could not believe the size of the tears and them not effecting my skating at all.

I've come to the conclusion that it happened from my stretching. I have done nothing else(hyperextend/resistance) that could have caused this. Now I am very cautious when I do my quad stretches on both legs.

Even my 2  Sports Orthopod friends agreed there is nothing much I can do about the injury now. The lump is still there and I even use my "muscle roller" on it to see if that will help it absorb, or something!  As long as it doesn't effect my skating or recumbent workouts, guess I will just let it ride, but extra caution when stretching them during and after skating

I know about this organization.  They are good at offering information.  But they do NOTHING for the diagnosic costs, which can run in the hundreds.   No cancer organization will, really.   So, I treat it as well as I can and accept the future as it comes.   Maybe, some day these cancer orgs will help save lives besides the "popular" cancer victims.

I have had esophageal problens for a while and this chart is correct.   I find apples and ginger to the most helpful.   Fatty foods are a real killer!    It is not only reflux but swallowing and digestion.   Not one of those "popular" conditions that have people donating to fight for a cure, though.

@NYwoman

In case people are not aware, there is an organization working towards this fight.  ECAN is the name.

Hi @lolakimono,

Thanks so much for putting in that link. What a great story about what sounds like a great man. Serves his country and then serves his community in Law Enforcement. Our country needs more men to follow his great example of love of country and community.

Sounds like a man that I would love to spend a few hours with talking hockey, more specifically, HIS St. Louis Blues team. They were a NHL expansion team(don't remember the year, but 1 of the very first) that were added to the Original NHL 6 Teams.

We had a Minor League here in our city(the CHL), and the very 1st St. Louis Team, was made up primarily of players from our Home Team, including their Goalie, Peter McDuffy, and David's favorite player, Barclay Plager. Barclay played Defense for our Championship teams, along with Noel Picard, who was a really tough guy. Unknown to many people in hockey, Noel Picard is in the famous picture of Bobby Orr, flying through the air. Any true hockey fan knows that picture, but doubt many notice Noel Picard in it.

Then one of my "soap box" speeches to anyone that will listen, about preventable(for most), Esophageal Cancer. Such a shame that having an Endoscopy could prevent so many from suffering from this disease. Had it not been for my brother-in-law's Esophageal Cancer, I may not have gotten my very first Endoscopy, which found my Barrett's Esophagus, a pre cursor to that same cancer.

Can't express how much I appreciate you putting up this link to that story. I can tell you from my lifetime of being around the sport of hockey, it is THE MOST caring and honest of all the major sports that exist in our country. That is keenly exhibited in this great man's story.

Thank you again,

@cherry  Probiotics have helped me a lot too. My gastroenterologist recommended them and I've been taking them for years.
