? About implanted dental plate

My DH wants to get his upper dental plate implanted and screwed into his jaw, has anyone ever heard of this? If you know someone who has are they happy with it? This is not a removable plate, the dentist unscrews it once a year and cleans it. He is concerned if food would get in there how do you get it out? He did ask the dentist and they did answer him but some times you need to hear from someone living with the dental implant, so any info would be greatly appreciated, have a great day!
