I have had scalp issues since I was a teen, I am now 67. I get itchy large scales on my scalp. I have had to use a medicated shampoo for most of my life. I have used WEN for eight years and the TT seemed to keep it at bay, but this spring it is back. The last two cleanses I have used a medicated shampoo as my first cleanse and my WEN as my second. I don't like the feel of my hair after the cleanse with the medicated shampoo, I am WEN spoiled, hoping I can go back to WEN for both cleanes soon. Has anyone else had a similer problem? Thanks

Have you ever seen a dermatologist about this?
Have you ever kept a log of symptoms and triggers to help you identify what might be a cause?
If not, I would do both of those things. No one in my family has scalp issues, by my mom and sister get dermatitis and eczema and I have skin sensitivity and keratosis pilaris (KP). A doctor may be able to tell you what you have and give you something to help. Learning more about it and/or keeping a log of symptoms and triggers can help you figure out how to avoid it.
I know KP gets worse in winter or summer - whenever skin is dry - and can flare up with hormones. That means I ramp up my treatment in the dryest months of winter, the hottest months of summer, and am more aggressive one week a month than the other three. I know that Zinc Oxide causes irritation, redness, and dry flakes on my chin if I use it on my face, so I avoid it.
If you can figure out what you have and when it gets worse, you might be able to make some changes to your lifestyle, diet, whatever and treat differently based on what else is going on. If you think the WEN in Tea Tree usually helps, you might want to try using the WEN Tea Tree oil on your scalp when you have flare-ups. And if you can guess when a flare-up might start based on past patterns, you may be able to treat it before it starts and prevent the flare-up.

I never had scalp issues in my life until I hit 60. Now my scalp is a hot mess. My Dern says it is psoriasis. His nurse practitioner just rolled her eyes and when he left she said it was hormones. My GP agrees with the Derm's nurse. He believes it is post menopausal dermatitis. I have itchy, scales in my scalp. I did some research on this and it seems to be a common problem in post menopausal women.
I tried WEN TT and it worked for about a year and then big itchy flakes came back about three years ago. I have tried everything and absolutely nothing works, including prescriptions the Derm wrote for me. If anybody has the solution, I would love to know what it is. Oddly enough, it is worse in the summer.

Thank you for your replies. I don't have a derm in my location, but I will see my GP next month. In the past, they have always given me a medicated shampoo. I just bought Selsun Blue when I went to the grocery store until I see my GP and so far, after two shampoos, it is a lot better. It is like one thing works for awhile and then the condition returns. Of course, I have to use my WEN after the Selsun Blue.

I also have always had scalp issues, but as long as I use WEN Tree Tea, Sweet Almond Mint, and/or Lavender (i usually do a combo of two), I do not have a problem. Seasonal WEN does not do as well for me as my hair and scalp just seem to have a different feel and I have to wash my hair more often.
I agree that you might see a derm, but I think tree tea is the answer, at least it is for me.

...Try using Dawn ...the original blue Dawn dish soap....it's very effective and has been used in nursing homes on scaley scalps for years.

For many years I had a wicked time with dermatitis on my hands, the itchy, scaly scratch it till it bleeds kind, they drove me crazy. Always had prescription cortisone on hand for that. That went away about 5 years ago then God knows why but suddenly I got it in one ear. The doctor gave me a prescription for Betamethasone Dipropionate lotion to put in my ear, it's not thick, it's kind of like watery. Then last year all of a sudden I started getting the patches on the back of my head. Last physical I had I showed them to my doctor and he told me to use the ear lotion on those spots. As long as I dab it onto those spots several times a week they stay gone. If I neglect to use it for about 5 days in a row, back it comes I scratch and pick and make a worse mess out of it and if I happen to have an appointment for a root job and haircut after one of those scratching and picking spells I feel like I have to explain to my hair gir land apologize that she has to see it. She's always understanding and tells me not to worry about it, that she has quite a few clients with the same problem. It's weird but after I get my roots done that kills it off and dries it up for several days before I have to go back to the lotion again.

Hi @Jhincher, you said something that gave me an idea. Maybe if you switched up your Wen scents on a regular basis that might make your Wen work more effectively.
lol, I actually use about 15 different Wen formulas (just because I like them) and I really feel that has helped keep my Wen at the top of it's game... because my scalp never gets used to anything. -- Mandarin Italian Fig (MIF) and the rice-based Fragrance Free CC are my go to first cleanses. For the second cleanse I rotate in all 12 Seasonals, as well as Bamboo Green Tea and 613 CC. ![]()

Below I've included some of the value Wen CC kits. Most of them are for the Classic formulas. I've also included a last one that would allow you to try the Classic, 613 and Restorative lines.
My suggestion would be to start with either the Tea Tree/Sweet Almond Mint (since you already use TT) duo or the Sweet Almond Mint/Pomegranate duo. Since SAM and POM are Universals (i.e. they work well for most people) that might be a good place to start.
You might also want to take a look at Cucumber Aloe (CA), since that's the most clarifying CC. -- Some people find it a bit drying for their hair. I have baby fine hair and it's worked well for me (TT with a bit of CA were my go to CCs when Chaz just had a Classic line).
Also, Chaz sometimes talks about how TT is great for folks with dandruff. And he'll sometimes mention that the FIG CC works well too becasue it has cedarwood extract in it. -- I can't use the FIG CC because it weighs down my baby fine hair.
Best of luck! ![]()

Scratching and picking at it is the worst thing you can do. I'm not preaching to you because I do the same thing. My scalp itches and I scratch. My hair stylist told me lots of women have this issue. She does as well. I also have it in my ears. My derm to me to use Lortimin AF ointment not the cream. It helped a lot but now you can't find the ointment in the drug stores. Frustrating.

For those of you who have ear involvement that is pretty typical of seborrheic dermatitis which is often misdiagnosed as psoriasis. I am a stylist and I have seborrheic dermatitis as well. Wen is one of the few things that I can use on a regular basis but I can't use tt cc because it has gluten. Fragrance bothers my sd somost of the time I use ff cc in combination with other cc. I can use the oil and rtm though. Try adding the oil to yourmroutine if you haven't already. I keep my sd at bay as long as I do regular oil treatments with tt on my scalp and something else on my ends.
Eta seborrheic dermatitis is typically more active in summer too. Also it's tied to gluten sensitivity and hormones as well, to whoever said their hormones were causing it.
