I am planning to go to Washington DC this fall and am looking for a hotel in a safe location that is close to the sites.  Can anyone make any recommendations? TIA

Google SAFE HOTELS IN WASHINGTON DC

I tried to copy and paste but I could not do it.  Perhaps it was my fault or perhaps this site woulld not let me do it.  In any case it was TripAdvisor

I was born in DC as was my hubby.  I went to school there as did he.  Never felt unsafe even now when I visit. But I can understand you wanting to be in a safe place.  The nearer you get to the monuments and the attractions the better chance to be okay.  But the price tag.  DC is a short ride to Virginia and also to Maryland.

I went to DC in 2011 and again in 2013. On the 2011 trip I stayed at the Washington Court and in ‘13 I stayed at the Hyatt Regency. Both were on New Jersey Avenue. They were absolutely perfect locations for access to Union Station, about 3 blocks away, and the Capitol complex, less than 3 blocks away. Union Station is the central location for taking the Metro to other locations and it has numerous food venues within the building. There are restaurants close by in the area; we didn’t breakfast in either hotel due to the cost and instead went to Starbucks across the street or an inexpensive place called The West Wing Cafe. The National Mall and the attractions in that area is within easy walking distance. Room rates: Washington Court was more expensive than the Hyatt. I always use Expedia as my starting place for hotel locations and initial rate comparison and then dig into researching options from there. Hope this info helps!

One of my dearest friends ever lives near the DC Capitol area and I visit as much as our schedules allow.  Although my friend has a home, I opt for the privacy of a hotel.  I most often choose JW Marriott, HIlton Garden Inn Georgetown, Holiday Inn Washington Capitol.  These chains have more than one location in the area, but those three I have used personally and rooms and service were satisfactory.  I have also stayed at Trump. It's wonderful and exquisite, but pricey unless you can get a deal through Expedia or one of the travel websites.

I agree with @granddi if you want to stay in DC. It’s located near many of the monuments and museums and should be safe. If you feel comfortable taking Metro, you could check some of the hotels in Northern Virginia and suburban Maryland. Most provide shuttle service to Metrobus depots or subway stations. I wouldn’t recommend driving a car in/into DC as parking spaces are extremely limited and the parking signs are very confusing (IMHO, they’re written to increase revenue from parking tickets). Washington and the surrounding areas are beautiful in the Fall. I hope you enjoy your visit.

I just finished booking our trip to DC Thanksgiving weekend.  We are staying at the Willard Hotel.  We stayed there once before and it was wonderful.  Full of history, if you enjoy that type of thing.  The prices are very reasonable (no matter which hotel you stay at) in the fall, vs going in June, which we also did.  Our June visit we opted to stay at a house thru AirBnB.

I agree about the Metro system, it's very clean and easy to use and we've gone everywhere on it.  We've never brought our vehicle and it's really not needed.  The weather was great during our previous visit so we did lots of walking.

Enjoy your visit and bring comfortable shoes Smiley Happy

Last time we went we stayed at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Our room was right over the Jefferson Memorial. So easy. We just left the hotel and were a few feet from the mall.

One time we stayed at the Hyatt Regency. It was on the other side of the mall. Security was good. You needed a room key to get onto an elevator. After inserting the room key you can only go to the floor where your room is.

My daughter and her husband are living out there temporarily (5 years) and I always stay at the Glover Park Inn which is a Kimpton/IHG Hotel.  It is near Georgetown and there is easy access to everything you would want to see.  It is very safe and the service is exceptional.  Hope this helps.

@itsmetoo

I looked up to see what we did 10 years ago.

We stayed in Jessup, MD. It was new at the time)

Across the highway is Historic Savage Mill (good)

We took the metro in and back out to where it ended (Greenbelt station) near there, grabbed our rental car, which was parked in the lot at the station, and were good to go.

This was a great way to “do” DC for us at this time.

Savage Mill had a great restaurant, so after a day of seeing sights, we would drive over to it from our motel and eat there, shop, etc.
