Re: Should I tell my brother about this?

Yes you should tell them. Next time take pictures of what you find.

I love the idea of taking a picture

of the pre -written notes @kaydee50

Yes, document everything! Because there's money involved and she's a colleague, this could get messy and you will want all of the evidence.

The note, the empty bowls, any accidents - take pictures of all of it. Take a video, if you can, narrating your findings.

I don't normally recommend this, but turn on the time/date stamp feature on your pictures while this is going on. (This geotags pictures with the location the picture was taken, so I normally always turn this feature off, but in case there's a lawsuit, you'll want that information in the photo file.)

I would care for the dogs until your brother returns. I wouldn’t say anything until he gets back. Why ruin his vacation!!

Your brother needs to know about the service he's gotten before he pays the woman, which I assume he will do as soon as he gets home.

Yes, absolutely tell him. Good to know you'll be taking on the animals until his return. This woman taking money for care she isn't giving and then going to the extent of lying about it, while clearly neglecting the animals, deserves a swift kick.

Re: Should I tell my brother about this?

Lots of good advice already given. I'd probably take the pre-written notes and pets to my home. Take photos around the house, as needed for brother. Send her an email asking when she'll be there next - meet her in the driveway to take back the house keys. Let her know you'll tell your brother after he returns that its obvious he wasn't getting the care he paid for and you're taking over dog care. Wouldn't want to ruin his vacation. Then present evidence once he returns.

Yes, what she said.  Let him enjoy the rest of his vacation.  There is nothing he can do about it when he is away except be mad and worry.

My brother and his fiancée have been on a cruise for the past week...they hired a pet sitter, Robin, to look after their two dogs; she gets the mail, walks the dogs, and feeds them; they have used her before and like her services. She is also a colleague of my brother's and they have worked together for almost ten years.  She leaves a detailed note each day about where they walked and how she combed them and brought them a special treat, etc. yesterday my brother asked me to put pick up some more dog food and drop it off at his house....I took it over and as I was leaving, I saw a note on the kitchen table....it was the note that she leaves after she sees the dogs each day. Problem? She had it all filled out in advance through next week when they will be back from their cruise....Dec.4. Each day has a different comment...but now I wonder if she has even been coming and doing the job...found a couple of "accidents" on the floor that I cleaned up in the kitchen and the food bowls are empty as are the water bowls, Both dogs, a schnauzer and a dachshund, seemed to be starving so I fed them and they devoured their food and followed me around for more....they never do that. Should I tell my brother while he is away and just feed them each day and tell him when he returns? He pays this woman $300. I don't have a way to contact her. Thanks.

@lovesrecess

That is a mess!. I think number one I would get evidence especially of the note. Can you take a picture of it? I understand the people suggesting you not mess up your brother's vacation but how will he feel when he knows you waited to tell him? Only you know that.

My dogs are always hungry and act like I never feed them. If there was poop on the floor then food has gone through them. It makes me wonder if she just flies through there and puts out food and water and leaves.

I would be hesitant to remove the dogs without more evidence because she may show up and see them gone and contact the police.

If I was going to feed them I would try to mark the food container so I could tell if any was removed or else the dogs may get too much food.

Is there any way that you can go by there at a time where she says she is caring for the dogs?

My main concern would be the welfare of the dogs. I think if I decided to remove them from the home that I would contact my brother and let him know.

Good luck and let us know the outcome.

Re: Should I tell my brother about this?

@lovesrecess YES YES AND YES!!! and tell your brother EXACTLY what's going on.

Those poor dogs could die. I haven't read the other posts but I am outraged!! She needs to be FIRED as  a NON dog watcher and be told exactly WHY.

Re: Should I tell my brother about this?

@lovesrecessIf you don't tell your brother you need to ensure she has no access to his house.  I think you said he has a lockbox so the code needs changed and unless you can do that then you have to tell him.  As long as he knows you are caring for them it shouldn't ruin his vacation.  I know I would sooner know ASAP what is going on.
