This is truly needs to be given to the correct department because this was a very serious incident.

I have lost a lot of my hearing lately and I watch TV with the closed caption.  QVC's closed caption is awful, full of mistakes and made up words.  But last evening on Kim Gravel's show was the worst faux pas ever.

I suggest that whoever is in charge of it needs to know that during the show ( I believe it was Friday or Saturday evening) , when the models Jamie and Cotia, Kim and Mary were dancing (for the time line info) and Kim said something and the CC typed it as a very profain word.  My only suggestion is for some one at QVC to put on the CC and view the word that was used and viewed by possibly thousands of people.  I dont know what if anything can be done about it or not, but it was one of the worst profain words a person could use.

I could not hear what Kim said but I know that the word that was shown she did not say.  I can not type the word because it would be poofed and I would be banned.

I am reporting this because I do not want QVC or anyone involved to be held liable should a viewer complain.

I hope this is clear because it is very hard to explain.

Please any mod reading this get this to the correct department as this was very serious.

Closed captioning is done by a MACHINE interpreter, not a human

@Desertdi ...........Yes I know that but the big wigs need to be aware and know the word that was written.  There are mistakes on the CC on other programs but nothing like this.

I agree that QVC's choice of transcription service is AWFUL and just 3 weeks ago did a feedback message to them about it. Thank you to whoever made me aware of that link at the bottom of the website.

The FCC would be the entity to hold QVC responsible for profanity and perhaps fine them. Viewers would not be holding them "liable" as proving damages would be difficult in civil court.

@Imaoldhippie. It's  probably best to forward  your comments directly to the mods.  They may never see this.

I agree there is probably not much QVC can do. What the automatron hears is what will come out.

 I found this online:

"Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) is a technology that automatically translates the spoken words in a video, without human help.

ASR transcripts are often riddled with inconsistencies and lack important closed caption quality standards.

ASR is fast, cheap, and a good rough draft. To give your viewers an accurate transcript, it’s always best practice to review and edit ASR transcripts."

I watch TV with CC when I go to bed because DH has been long asleep. You should see how this works with reruns of Bewitched!  Smiley Wink

@beach-mom  I also watch TV late at night and those old movies and comedies are something else. Some of the words are not bad but just all the xxxxx make me laugh.

@Imaoldhippie - Out of curiosity, how were you viewing the presentation? On your TV or on the app or online? Depending on the way QVC chooses to contract or permit closed captioning options, it may or may not be responsible for the output. It's possible the error lies with a streaming or cable service provider rather than QVC.

And unfortunately, if this was not part of a presentation or will not be aired again (there are plenty of times on Kim's shows where the cameras are rolling but nothing is being recorded for later viewing), there may be little that can be done. I agree that this incident is concerning, but there may not be a way to rectify it or prevent it from happening again, especially if automatic captioning is being used—though one would hope there is some sort of system dictionary or word list that could be updated with instructions to never use such a term in the future (since it is obviously never desirable or necessary).
