Hi everyone, I hope you all don't mind that I'm using your notification names that I just stored in the "Macro" setting to test this function. Thanks for sharing this info!!! Smiley Happy

Hi @bebe777 ... I received your notification and I am really surprised that I did.  I can't seem to get mine to work with any screen names that have spaces.  If they don't come up in blue in the post it means the notification did not go through.

@Boehm Collector, I hate to say this but you really need to change your name to either BoehnCollector or Boehm_Collector.

I happen to know a bit more about this than the average bear, because I send out OTO notifications for folks in one of the sub-forums. You may want to have a look at posts #28-30 of this notification thread (in the QVC forums) because these folks have the same sorts of issues as you do. lol, it will become self-evident as soon as you look at the names. What's really strange is that about half of the two word names work all the time, while the other half just go crazy. And there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why some work and others don't work. The hyphenated names actually look alright but they literally reformat themselves right in the middle of the posting process.

lol, the really short answer is that you really should probably modify your name. Smiley Wink

___

@Boehm Collector, I posted this earlier in the thread but I'm reposting it just in case you missed it...

There actually is a sporadic problem with screen names that:

* have a space in them (i.e QVC fan)

* have a hyphen (i.e. QVC-fan) in their name -- though an underscore (QVC_fan) works just fine.

I send out a number of notifications and so I set up a notification list. I just cut and past the notifications within each message. This system works really well except for the types of names listed above.

This cut and paste system never seems to work for the names that have hyphens in them. Part of the name gets highlighted while the other part doesn't get highlighted... and so the notification frequently goes to another person with the partial name.

The cut and paste system only works about half the time for the two work names... and there's now particular reason why the notification seems to work with some two word names and not others.

What makes it even more frustrating is that when I start typing in the names for the failed notification names... their names almost never show up on the drop down menus... unless they happen to have a very unusual name... but even that doesn't always seem to work.

So the only way I can sen them notifications is sort of via pony express...

* I type their notification name in the search box above

* then on the drop down menu just to the right I choose the "User" option and click on "GO"

* that takes me to a page where all the similar names are.

* I click on the person's name which takes me to there general info page

* then I click on their latest post, and then click on the "Reply" to post option

* then I type in "@" which brings up a short notification listing and, of course, their name is included in it. I choose their name and the coded notification for their name appears

*then I cut their notification name out, go back to the message I was originally composing and paste their "live" notification name in.

Yup, it's a major headache and mess.

Per the moderators, this is a glitch in the system that can't be fixed. So I have suggested to these folks that they modify their names by either making it one word (I.e. QVCfan) or by using an underscore (QVC_fan). Some folks have, and others haven't... it's their call. And except in a rare instance, these days I just cut and paste notifications and let be what will be. Smiley Happy

You did everything correctly as far as I can tell!  Let's call in the big guns...maybe one of them can help figure it out...it would be a great feature for, say, a recipe group.

Is this something we can do with accuracy in a macro?  It seems to work sometimes, but sometimes not.  Any suggestions?  Please feel free to use my name for testing.

Hi, there, @MacDUFF!  I saw the notification, and what a humbling surprise and honor to be included in the "big guns!"Smiley

This is a great thread, and it's nice to see everyone finding new ways to use the Macro feature.  Another example of the benefits of the new platform!

My experience has been that all the "@names" I include in macros work as long as they don't have the space problem many of us know about, and as long as we type the nickname exactly as it is.  My feeling is...  as long as there is such a tricky software problem with names which include spaces, there always will be odd things happening when we try to reference them.

Yes, there are work-arounds, but not everyone will be interested in learning or using them.

@bebe777 provided a wonderful explanation.  I'll add what @Keyai wrote in @bebe777's October thread ("Moderator question - problem w/ Notification names"):"

~~~~~~~~~~~~
"The issue is with the space. Any nickname with a space@ will not be able to be work with the @ mention function that was enabled with the new forum platform. This is a known issue which would require Community members to change their nickname to remove spaces. For the QVC team we added hyphens or underscores to remove spaces. Example:  Keyai-QVC or David_Venable
We made so many changes when moving to this new platform we did not feel it was worth forcing members to change the format of their nicknames. In the future new members will not be able to create a nickname with a space to address this topic that you noticed.
I hope this explanation addresses your question."
~~~~~~~~~~~~

My suggestion was (and still is) that it might be beneficial for the moderators to announce this issue so most posters will know and can change their nicknames to remove the space if they want to do so.

Just a thought.Smiley

There seems to be something weird happening with the name system. The other day someone tagged me in a post and I got notified, but the post itself did not highlight my name in blue. I haven't seen a lot of that, but it was strange. It was like the forum a few months back before they added the code to make hyperlinks and names look different.

Sorry, but I don't know exactly how the macros work on this forum.

I don't type the same thing often enough to need a macro, so I haven't played with them. Unfortunately, I won't have much time to test them out until maybe January. I hope Keyai or DooBdoo can be more help.

If any of you DO figure it out, if you summarize the instructions and tag me in the summary post, I will add the link to the post in my signature.

@ChynnaBlue@, The @-plus-nickname notifications don't appear in blue unless we accept the default font (size, color, etc.).  If we customize the text as I'm doing, even though a notification is triggered the nickname doesn't appear as being highlighted in a different color.

(eta:  The same is true for hyperlinks.)

That must be it. One more reason to avoid customizing individual posts, as fun as it may be. I don't customize font in individual posts because it breaks things and it makes things harder for others when the poster picks a bad color, font, or font size.

1.  Of course you're one of the big guns!  I'll never forget how you and Chynna helped me and so many others to navigate the boards at the last update.  @ChynnaBlue

2.  Yeah, that weird "space in the screen name" problem.  But, that can't be the problem with my screen name (no spaces), and on @bebe777's first try and subsequent tries for a group macro, it was my name (in the middle of a list of names) that didn't highlight blue...a different, but also odd, problem...???  And I'm 99.999% sure bebe typed my name correctly...???   So, either a problem with setting up group macros, or.............

I swear I'm beginning to think it was just my screen name that did not work in bebe's first group macro attempt (other than Boehm's, which has the space)!!
