@candys mine

I usually don't have a ham bone at hand so I buy a ham steak and that works well.  It is real ham not a pressed together product and has a small round bone in it.  Provides a good amount of meat for the soup.  Just shred it up when soup is cooked.

Thank you SO much for bringing up this soup.  From the time my younger sister was a small child she absolutely craved it.  I lost her to cancer several years back.  She was a wonderful nurse who went into private care and was always on the side of the patient, bar none.  She even took her own food to them.

I make it vegetarian. One thing I know whatever yet recipe, after going in the refrigerator it gets very thick and I have to add liquids.

So just veggie stock and then everything else? This is what I was looking for-is there a recipe you use or just your common sense? Smiley Happy

@buyornot

 Split pea soup is one of my favorites--no exact recipe, just what I like to put in it.

My must-haves for a great split pea soup are chopped onions, chopped carrots, chopped celery, chicken broth or stock ,  and either a ham bone or ham hocks--all cooked long and slow.

If some of the soup is to be stored in fridge/freezer, it's good to not have too much liquid volume.  It can always be thinned with water or broth when prepared for eating.

Ham bones are sold out of a freezer case at our local HoneyBaked Ham stores.  Very convenient, and you can usually find one either large or smaller to suit your needs.

I've found a fair amount of meat on those bones, too.
