My mom used caramel candy.

The deal was that if we would unwrap them all, we could lick the pan.  Win-Win

If you don't mind a quick and easy solution : Kraft used to make caramel sheets that you can wrap around the apple...sticks included....at your supermarket it should be near the apples...we did it a few times when I was kid..ok about 35 years ago...they wer genius and I cannot imagine why they wouldn't be sold any more !

Yes I remember these also, I'm sure people are not into making these, easier to go to store and buy them already done. My Krogers usually have them.

I too prefer a simple caramel- or chocolate-covered apple.  I don't care for the way Mrs. Pringles' are plastered with candy and nuts.  That's overkill - too much of a good thing.

@ValuSkr. I consider Mrs Prindibles an effective way to ruin a perfectly good apple.

I want to make caramel apples without all the junk on the outside like chips etc  Do any of you have a rich recipe that I could use  I remember Mrs P years ago  They just had caramel and smooth chocolate

@mollymaggie What you want is a ball point that won't flake off.  Look for "Caramel Apples.  I would go to All recipies or Recipes .com.

My preference is the kind that breaks off.

I don't have a recipe, but I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one that doesn't like all the extra junk loaded on to a caramel apple. All I want is some rich, gooey caramel and maybe a few nuts on a tart apple! We have a local candy company that makes them that way and sells them in local grocery stores. Homemade caramel would be so good, but a lot more work than just melting store bought caramels.
