@Honeybit

I got it at Bed Bath & Beyond.  I had to order it online as it wasn't sold in of their stores, and I couldn't find it at Walmart, JCP etc.  Only those lousy hand pump ones.

I've had the Laura Bush cookie recipe forever and haven't tried it yet!

Ina's recipe looks good too!  I notice she 'sifts'!

I always sift even if the recipe doesn't call for it but have been told I am wasting my time.

Do you sift your flour and dry ingredients when baking?

@RespectLife

@VaBelle35

I do because I figure it sifts & mixes the ingredients at the same time.

I actually use a sifter like this, that puppy is old!!!

LOL @ChiliPepper

I went and bought a new version of that exact sifter!  It was kinda hard to find!  Had to order it.  Bought 2 pieces of junk from BBB that broke fast and returned them.  Ordered this guy minus the rust!  LOL

The crank was the best design.  The others...you squeezed the handle in and out.  Not only was it hard on the hands...but that is the area that the spring boinked out both times it broke!

Prior I was using a sieve...and making a major mess all the time!

I use a lot of cocoa which is always lumpy so I got in the habit of sifting all the dry guys.

Does it make a difference?  DUNNO!  LOL

@RespectLife

I think it makes a difference.

These little whirly-gigs break up any lumps like a charm.

My DM had this same sifter for awhile.  Here is how old I am.  When i was extremely young - less than 5, we lived in a duplex.  The kitchen cabinet had on the side, a "cabinet" that hung with a built in sifter.  You would pour your flour in at the top and sift out what you needed.  When my parents moved from there into a house, my Dad pryed that sifter off the cabinet and took with them!   It was the best sifter my Mom ever had. Funny thing is none of us could remember what happened to it.  She purchased the one above after losing that contraband sifter!  And if I remember correctly, flour didn't use to come pre-sifted as it does now.  You really did need to sift it to get the best result.  Sifting now helps to distribute things like salt, cream of tartar, baking powder or soda, etc into the flour.  It also aerates the flour and should produce a lighter texture of whatever we are making.  I don't always sift, but will often "fluff" flour with a whisk.  When I do sift, I use a strainer.  It can make a mess so have to pay attention and use a large bowl but I find it does a great job and is easier on my hand.

Thanks @RespectLife but I think things are going to be great!  Vince just left and we worked through a couple of different scenarios financially and I should be able to sell the house and buy a two bedroom condo with underground parking and still have money left over (plus he thinks he can get me a job with a lawyer friend of his).  I am completely fine with the price he wants to list at as it's 20k more than what I paid for it.  There will be no sign up that the house is for sale nor will there be any open houses since I live alone.  Today just could not have gone better, I feel so much better about everything . . . Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and kind words, yay!  Heart

This is what I use to sift.  I got this from Martha I think?  Ina stirs hers with a whisk I think (or I have it backwards).

I always sift if the recipe calls for it.  If not, I don't bother.

That's great news.  I'm glad it's working out.

My uncle's house will need to be gutted for it to sell.  His next door neighbor wants it, as is, for his MIL.  To me, I'm happy to do a private sale and offload it to someone who wants it vs trying to get it fixed up enough to show.  It is far beyond a coat of paint.  I think it needs to be taken down to the studs.

Thanks for the link -- I'm going to order a backup (in case the rust ever wins).

I like the idea of the battery-powered one, too, although I REALLY don't want anything else that requires batteries.  I remember when C cells and D cells were known as "flashlight batteries" because that's the only thing they were used for.  Now there are more kinds of batteries than there are lightbulbs.  [Anyone have an application handy for membership in the Luddite Society?]

I am going to make a version of this sometime this week. I'll probably use boneless chicken thighs though instead of wings.

Screen-Shot-2014-09-21-at-9.44.19-AM.png

Slow Cooker Korean Chicken Wings
Serves 12

Ingredients
  1. 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  2. 2 tablespoons lime juice
  3. 3/4 cup honey
  4. 1/2 cup soy sauce
  5. 1/3 cup Sriracha sauce
  6. 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  7. 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  8. 4 garlic cloves, minced
  9. 4 pounds chicken wings, split at joints, tips removed
  10. 1/4 cup sliced green onions
  11. 2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds
Instructions
  1. In slow cooker crock, stir cornstarch and lime juice until cornstarch is dissolved.
  2. Add honey, soy sauce, sriracha sauce, sesame oil, ginger and garlic. Mix until well blended.
  3. Add wings to crock. Stir until wings are coated.
  4. Cover and cook on HIGH for 2 hours or LOW for 4 hours.
  5. Line a shallow baking pan with aluminum foil and spray with nonstick cooking spray.
  6. Remove wings from sauce in crock and place on foil-lined baking pan.
  7. Pour sauce into small saucepan. Cook over medium heat until sauce has reached a boil and has reduced and thickened.
  8. Heat broiler to HIGH. Broil wings for 18 to 20 minutes, turning and brushing with sauce, until wings are browned and crispy.
  9. Sprinkle with green onions and sesame before serving. Serve with additional sauce, if desired.

Chili,

     This looks REALLY good.  The sauce sounds similar to Bulgogi marinade that a Korean restaurant in the area has--which we all love.  Thanks for sharing it.  What a great idea to use a less expensive part of the chicken!

     While we are on the subject of saving money . . . DH and I had lunch at a Golden Corral recently.  You can get a large takeout box for $4.25 a pound with a free bag of free yeast dinner roles (about 6-8).

     They have Lorenzo's sausage on their buffet.  It is a wonderful mild sausage that just cannot be found anywhere locally.  They also have really nice sliders.

     In one takeout box (for a little over seven dollars), we got four sliders (we just took the patties without the rolls since we got the free ones) and a whole lot of the sausages.

     When I got home, I popped the sliders and the sausages (which I cut up into slices) into the freezer.  (There was a QUART of sausage pieces, by the way.)  They also have fried chicken, roast beef, and lots of other nice things on the buffet line.  I will probably use the sausage in spaghetti sauce, omletts, or other things.   We feel like we got a good deal for the money.

Whatever you do, don't ask for "transistor batteries"

@Writer with Flair

Did you see there is a new episode of Scorpion on tonight?  I didn't get back to you the other day and didn't think of it until tonight; you asked about Ray.  YESSS!   I do wish they would bring him back. I keep thinking in my mind, the way they wrote him out, it was not a definitive write out-like they left the door open and we might see him again.  It's time!  Maybe Ray and Paige's grifter Mom would be good together?!   Would make an interesting plot or two - guess I better leave it to the writers as obviously I wouldn't make a living writing!

Mustang,

     Yes, we did watch "Scorpion" last night.  Your idea about Ray and Paige's mother getting together is intriguing.  It would be interesting to see how all that would work out plot-wise and chemistry-wise.

     Your comments about Ray made me try to remember some of the people who were on the show and then were written off:

  • Drew (Ralph’s father and Paige’s ex-husband)
  • Elia (the tech millionaire who gave Walter that suped-up sports car)
  • Tim (the Navy SEAL who liked Paige and hated Walter)
  • The girl Walter speed-dated (I don’t remember her name)
  • Megan (Walter’s dying sister)
  • Walter's parents
  • Happy's father
  • That really quirky lawyer with his own commercial that did some legal work for the team and ultimately became the team's lawyer.

Would you like to see any of them (or others I could not remember) come back?

     Obviously, Megan isn't coming back unless the show starts moving to the science fiction genre (not likely).

     I imagine Tim and Drew might come back unless they find another antagonist to Walter's character.  They might bring in another female character who starts to hit on Walter and makes Paige jealous and reconsider her feelings about Walter.  (I sorta like that idea.  Remember I said it first in case the writers decide to go that way!)

     I can't see the speed-dating girl coming back.  Didn't she pretty much tell Walter to take a hike?  Wasn't it something about too much excitement after she almost got blown up?

     Elia could come back but I don't find him to be a very interesting character as previously written (although I really like the actor who played him who used to be on "The Office" as Michael's second-level manager).

     Walters parents could reappear from time to time, but I have a stronger feeling that Happy's father may reappear after her baby arrives.  There still seems to be some emotional fences that need to be mended between Happy and her father.

     That lawyer character was an absolute delight.  He represented Sylvester about something to do with a gainme show, didn't he??  I thought he was hilarious.  I wish they could bring him back periodically.

     That's all I got.
