I prefer mashed with some skin left on if eating them plain, but if gravy is involved, better whip ‘em. The latter only happens once or twice a year.

Re: Mashed or Whipped Potatoes?

I always mash my potatoes first, then whip them if serving with gravy.

I also mash them with sour cream, cheese, crumbeled bacon and parsley.  I leave them lumpy and with skins on.

I like than both ways.

Re: Mashed or Whipped Potatoes?

Honestly, it really doesn't matter.

I prefer whole grain brown rice or baked sweet potatoes.   White potatoes are less healthy, IMO.

Re: Mashed or Whipped Potatoes?

As long as a potato isn't covered in cheese, or sour cream, I like it.   I use a mixer when I mash potatoes, but do not overwhip.   I like to see visible lumps for gravy to cling to.

My late MIL overwhipped the potatoes until they looked like a vanilla milkshake; am sure you could've pulled them thru a straw, which I did not like at all.

@Sooner,

I actually have to be in the mood for french fries and they have to be well done and crispy.

I love mashed potatoes,my favorite anytime but never whipped.

My mother is like you-baked,fr fries, any kind but mashed.

So weird!😄

@On It  Whipped with butter, salt and hot milk. You have to be careful not to over mix, otherwise it turns into a gloppy mess. Did you know you can keep whipped potatoes fluffy for 2 or 3 hours in a crockpot on warm? A co-worker of mine told me about this 5  years ago. Life changing!! It means I can do them at my leisure tomorrow morning! Yea!

Re: Mashed or Whipped Potatoes?

Personally, I'm not a fan of the ones made with a mixer.   IMO, it ruins them.  I hand-mash and also leave the skin on.  Lots of butter, some hard cheese, and s&p.   Very tasty and there is some texture so they're not like baby food.

I love potatoes.  Well, everything but potato salad.   That's gross with the mayo and eggs in there.  But I love mashers, fried, french fries, baked.  Smiley Happy
