Just a silly question..does anybody know the secret to making hamburgers on the stovetop?  I have tried using a skillet, and electric skillet and a cast iron grill that goes directly on the gas burner..not good results very messy, does not seem worth the mess. any suggestions?  ha besides going out to eat?

Seems like you have covered all the options except maybe a grill pan.  That is what I use.  It is still messy but at least the mess is contained mostly in the pan.

I insisted the Appliance Store throw in a free grill for right on my gas burner cook top.

I have yet to use it!  I can just visualize how hard it would be to clean that....and the grease would go everywhere!

I have several grill pans and they aren't too hard to clean.  Burgers come out pretty good too!

Edited to add:  My grill pans are of the nonstick type...NOT true 100% cast iron.  They still give good sear marks but are easier to clean.

Are you saying your burgers are not good or that they make a mess?  The best thing to cook burgers and not have a mess in a George Foreman Grill.  If your burgers are not turning out good we need to know how you are fixing them.

I was at the grand opening of the Original McDonald's in Des Plaines, IL.

I was not aware that a person could even make a hamburger at home(!!!)

The secret key is the outdoor grille!  Nothing better than that

@Desertdi, when was that?  I come from a small town in Nova Scotia.  When I went to university, a friend invited me to her home in the capital city of our Province (where I now live).  That was the first time I had McDonald’s.  I was IN LOVE with their 1/4 pounder with cheese.  LM

@Lilysmom   Des Plaines is a suburb of Chicago, and it was 1955. di

@Desertdi, although I don’t go often, I still love McDonald’s and the fact that you can get the same burger anywhere in the world.

OP, the only way I eat burgers at home is on the BBQ.  I am one of ten children.  My mother could make a pan of hamburgers and gravy that were to die for.  Sorry I never learned that dish.  DH just about died and went to heaven first time he ate that.  She used ground chuck.  I miss her every day.  LM

@Lilysmom, your post reminded me of my mothers roasted potatoes that she would do in the cast iron skillet along side the eye round roast.

Neither my sister or myself were ever able to get them to turn out the way hers did and we were convinced that she wasn't giving us the complete instructions!

I use an 80/20 mixture and do most of the cooking on the stove in my cast iron pan.  When about half-way through, I put the pan in the oven until they get done.  Nothing fancy, but I do like doing them on the outside grill to avoid a mess in the kitchen.  I usually make caramelized onions and brown gravy for them, but I also like a toasted and buttered potato bun.

The next time that I hear salt and ice together, it better be in a margarita!
