I have been looking for years for a MOIST Gingerbread receipe.  I think over the past 40 odd years I must have tried 17 or so different receipes and none have really hit the mark.  Most are too dry, some too gooey and others just don't taste that great.   I was hoping maybe some of you might  share your favorite reciepe,.

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup softened butter

1 egg

1 cup molasses

1/2 tsp salt

2 1/2 cups flour

1 1/2 tsp baking soda

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp ground ginger

1/2 tsp ground cloves

1 cup very hot water

Cream butter and sugar with electric mixer in big bowl.  Mix in egg and molasses.  Sift flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves into mixture and blend.  Beat in hot water until batter is smooth.

Pour batter into greased 9x13" baking pan.  Bake at 350 degrees until toothpick comes out clean,  32-35 minutes.

Don't be afraid that the batter is so thin, it is supposed to be that way.

Gramercy Tavern Ginger bread with Guiness  stout beer  has been my Christmas tradition .  It takes some preparation and  being organized .

Recipe is pretty similar to what has been posted - except you  mix molasses and beer in sauce pan bring to a boil  remove from heat  and quickly add the baking soda - let cool  . have allyour dry ingredients  all sifted and ready to go , cream your eggs and sugar and vegetable oil .

2 cups of sifted flour,  1 cup of Guiness stout, 3 eggs, 1 cup drk molasses ( not blackstrap), 1 cup drk brown sugar, 1 cup granulated sugar, 3/4 cup vegetable oil , along with usual  1/2 tsp baking soda, 1 1/2 tsp baking powder,  2 TBS ground ginger, 1 Tsp cinnamon,  pinch of cardamom ,  1./4 tsp nutmeg .

makes sure you coat the inside of the bundt pan generously and  flour- knock  any excess flour . makesure you sift all the spices & flour - eliminate any lumps , Bake 350 degress  50 min - and don't over bake .

@Silver Fox1   Have you ever tried topping gingerbread with ''lemon sauce''?  In my family, we never served gingerbread without lemon sauce...delish !

@sarahpanda That lemon sauce idea sounds tasty.  I have my mother's recipe for a lemon sauce she used to serve with a blueberry crumb cake:

1/2 cup sugar

4 1/2 tsp cornstarch

1 tsp lemon zest

1 cup water

1 tbsp butter

2 tbsp lemon juice

Whisk sugar, cornstarch, and zest in saucepan.  Slowly whisk in water.  Bring to boil for 2 minutes while whisking until thickened.  Take off stove and stir in butter and lemon juice.
