Fish recipes for non fish eater?

I'm trying to eat healthier this year. I would like to start eating more fish for health benefits (rather than eating red meat). However in the past when I've tried to eat fish it usually goes to waste since I find that I don't use it or don't like the recipes I've tried. What are your tried and true fish recipes? Any type of fish is fine since I can get many from local grocery stores. Please share your favorite fish recipes. Thank you!!

Re: Fish recipes for non fish eater?

We have had this topic up before, and many people will disagree with me. I do not eat fish or seafood unless I've caught it myself in clean water. I do not trust wild or farmed fish. Mercury, bacteria, etc. The fish farms in Asia are sewers. Then there is the issue of 'sustainable' species. I read that the safest, healthiest, eco-friendliest fish are canned sardines-no thanks!

I know they tell you to eat fish 3x week for health reasons. Maybe years ago, but I don't think it's safe. They ever advise pregnant women to avoid some species because of mercury and other pollutants.

Rather than spreading paranoia, here's a site with some facts on fish safety and mercury. Even for fish with fairly high levels of mercury, it's safe to eat up to 3 times a month. (Pregnant women should follow different guidelines - as they should with many things that are safe for adults, but not a developing fetus.) http://www.nrdc.org/health/effects/mercury/guide.asp I like salmon, because it usually tastes less "fishy" than some other fish. There was a thread a few days ago with salmon recipes, so you may want to look for that thread.

Re: Fish recipes for non fish eater?

I don't eat it because I'm allergic to all fish. I do make wild sockeye salmon for my husband which I buy from Vital Choice Seafood online. It comes fresh frozen, skinned and boned in dry ice. The company is out of Alaska and I read about them in one of Dr. Perricone's books. They come highly recommended as their fish is not contaminated. Also Andrew Weil recommends them too. We have been ordering our salmon from Vital Choice for about 7 years and its better than any of the fish markets here in New York. Everything about it is different including the color, texture, tenderness and flavor. If you like salmon I have a great recipe from Giada called "salmon baked in foil" (you can google it). its really delicious. I developed the fish allergy about 5 years ago so prior to that I used to eat it all the time.

Re: Fish recipes for non fish eater?

Fish lover here! However, after trying many types I've settled on Haddock primarily.

Love trout for its sweet white meat but the small bones are another issue. I either bake or pan cook in minimal oil as I'm grease sensitive. Bake in oven for 25 mins at 375 on aluminum foil for fast clean-up - oil foil slightly so skin doesn't stick - pats of butter inside fish slit - thin rings of lemon - some pepper - garlic powder and sprinkle paprika for color.

Haddock - either pan or bake. When I bake I spread a coating of mayo on the up side - sprinkle garlic powder, light pepper and paprika. Very near the end of cooking I flip the fish over so direct heat can thoroughly cook the top side - and flip back. The mayo keeps it moist and acts like a tarter sauce all in one.

Then there's always bread crumbs - shake & bake - Italian crumbs - the list is enlist!

Salmon - not a favorite here unless it's sweet and not fishy.

Enjoy fish - I'm tired of red meat too. Try a leg of lamb w/garlic roast - yum yum

Re: Fish recipes for non fish eater?

I see a posting re: Vital Choice here. I bought an assortment from them last year - with free shipping. I'm sure it's the best you can get - fresh direct form Alaska; but I didn't enjoy any of it. Gave some to my nut fisherman next door - he didn't ask for more. The taste was 'different' from what we (on land) are accustomed to. I threw it in the trash. Just another person's opinion.

Re: Fish recipes for non fish eater?

This is a good recipe for people not overly fond of fish. My mother loveS this but does not love salmon!

BARBECUE ROASTED SALMON

1/4 c pineapple juice
2 T fresh lemon juice
4 salmon fillets
2 T brown sugar
4 t chili powder
2 t lemon zest, chopped
3/4 t ground cumin
1/2 t salt
1/4 t ground cinnamon
lemon slices (optional)

Combine pineapple juice, lemon juice and salmon in zip-top plastic bag. Marinate in fridge for an hour occasionally turning.

Pre heat oven to 400 degrees.

Remove fish from marinade. Discard marinade. Combine rest of ingredients (except lemon slices) in a bowl. Rub over fish. Place in a baking dish coated with oil or cooking spray. Bake for about 12 minutes or until fish flakes easily when tested with fork.

For those that do not like fish, but want the benefits, you can take fish oil vitamins, and still reap the same heart healthiness that comes with eating fish several times a week. {#emotions_dlg.thumbup}
