Re: Figs Figs, Figs Figs! Help!

@Mothertrucker

My parents both  grew up in Pasadena and I was born there but we moved to Seal Beach when I was in 3rd grade and I spend the rest of my youth on the beaches of Orange County.

Well, i was in Seal Beach last week when my Grandkids were visiting!- (its right down the 605..close!) We had a beach house in Corona Del Mar when I was growing up..a litle beach called China cove, it is right across from the Jetty..do you remember it?

Its such a small world!

Could you make fig newtons / fig bars?  I've never done so but would love to try.  Did find a recipe online.

Re: Figs Figs, Figs Figs! Help!

Such a coincidence to find this thread!  For the first time yesterday, I harvested two figs from my three year old tree, and I went online and googled "figs" and this thread was the first one listed.

Mine are also the dark mission figs.  Last year, the tree produced two figs that fell off before ripening.(perhaps birds knocked them off?)  This year, I have at least two dozen, and picked two nice ones yesterday.  I have no problem figuring out how to use two, but was wondering what to do with the others once they ripen.

If I can't use them or give them away right away, I think I'll dehydrate them in my oven.  I found lots of online info how to do this.

I love the photo of the cake.. my daughter has made something similar, using our plums..it was delicious!  Don't have too many plums this year.  You never know with fruit trees...you have a few years with not much production, followed by a year with over abundance.

@Mothertrucker, my blood glucose just shot up to near coma range just looking at that picture! OMG! I can just imagine the taste....I could never use your recipe, but does that "top" layer have butter and brown sugar in it?

....the brain is powerful....I can imagine-and dream!

@Mothertrucker, if you have any insulin dependent diabetics in your life, you are medically prepared to rescue them! I officially declare your cake should be a medical necessity!

Pack in jar, fill with port or cognac the way the French do prunes. Add a little orange peel or cinnamon stick if you like and a touch of orange liqueur.  Great beside a simple cake or ice cream.

PS - Be careful walking under the wild parrots after they eat the figs!

Very interesting! I will certainly try this!

..and one thing about wild parrots..You can CERTAINLY hear them coming, so its easy to stay out of their way!
