I never tried canned broth, so as have no idea what it tastes like, but if you make your own, you can make it salt free and just put it in the refrigerator, then skim the fat off, which I do.
I am confused on how it is healthier to buy it. Easier for you, I understand. The last time I went shopping for a beef bone, they were stripped of all meat and the bones were expensive. The cost was almost $9 for one bone and it was frozen and not fresh. I wanted to make some french onion soup, but passed on that price.
I hope this isn’t going to be the norm. I might have to try the canned beef broth if I can’t find affordable bones. They used to give the bones away free.
Added: I just went to the website and checked out the College Inn low sodium no fat chicken broth. 1 cup of broth has no calories, no fat and no vitamins or minerals. It contains 1 gram sugar and 18% of the sodium needed per day.
It doesn’t look unhealthy, but it appears to be only flavored salt water. I would think if it was made from bones, it would have some mineral content.

I find that "Better Than Bouillon" broth concentrates make a serviceable option to homemade broth. Nothing is as tasty as homemade stock.

Well.....except for chicken soup, I do. I haven't made a lot of soup during my lifetime. If a family member passes their recipe to me I'll follow it until I got it memorized. On the cooktop right now is a pot of vegetable soup made from my S-I-L's recipe, its a little different from other vegetable soup recipes I've seen.
DH is not an experimental eater, so aside from this vegetable soup, wedding and beef or chicken noodle he does not indulge. Won't even taste them. In my opinion, he's missing out on many great soups. It makes no sense for me to make a pot of soup for just myself.

Just finished making loaded baked potato soup. Sorta from scratch. Added Swanson's seasonings and I did the rest. Really good. I go back and forth from scratch and needing a little help from seasoning packets.

I use a recipe as a guideline. In the end we make all recipes our own.

No, I don't. Mostly I make vegetable beef or potato soup. DH makes ham/ sausage and bean soup.

yes---I use a recipe for EVERYTHING I cook! I do not pocess the gene to just dump stuff and have it come out wonderful and delicous. My SIL is one of those gals---OMG--the things she can come up with with this and that!!!

I use a recipe as a guideline. I like for each soup to have it's own taste just like other foods do.

The only soup I like to make is vegetable beef. I cut up the beef and boil in water and then simmer, add beef bouillon, fresh veggies likes carrots, potatoes and the rest are frozen veggies and seasonings. It's great with crusty bread or cornbread. ![]()
