It's nice of you to invite your ex. But I'm sorry I can't help with the menu; I'm at a loss for ideas myself.

Yum! How about fancy mashed potatoes, and carrots with butter and a dab of honey.

@Group 5 minus 1 you spelled it right (Italian teacher, here
).
I don't think the OP meant bracciole. She makes it in the Crockpot. Maybe you can make it that way (these days, everything is made in a Crockpot!), but in my experience, it was not made in a slow cooker.

@El from NJ @Group 5 minus 1 @GloriBee ...
I googled "Crockpot Italian Beef" and found this info...It is basically a beef roast that has been well seasoned with garlic, parsley, oregano, etc...and simmered in a slow cooker....It comes out really tender and sounds delicious!

When Mom did it she slow cooked it in the oven or electric skillet or Dutch Oven. It was so good. She'd use round steak, remove the fat, stuff the meat w/bread crumbs, grated cheese, parsley. Then roll up the meat, tie it w/string, sear the meat and then bake it for a long time in a Dutch oven w/spaghetti sauce.

Macaroni and cheese is usually a hit and is good hot or room temperature.
I wouldn't cater to the kids. They'll eat half a dinner roll, a carrot stick, and three cookies no matter what you fix special for them.

I'm fairly certain that what @Luvsmyfam is speaking about is 'Chicago Italian Beef' for sandwiches.
It's hugely popular in that city, & is a go-to for many visitors.
Florida has key lime pie, New England has its chowder, & Chicago has Italian Beef, as well as their famous deep dish pizza.
There was a poster, @Chicagoan, who often shared recipes here.
This was the recipe she shared for her Chicago Italian Beef.
Chicago Italian Beef
Ingredients
5 lbs rump roast (do not substitute for a different type roast)
2 (10 1/4 ounce) cans beef consomme (Broth)
1 (1 ounce) package Good Seasonings Italian salad dressing mix
pepperoncini peppers (1/2-1 jars depending on level of spiciness)
giardiniera (1/2-1 jars)
3-5 sweet green peppers (according to size)
French bread
Crock Pot Directions
Cook first 5 ingredients in a Crock Pot on LOW for 18 (eighteen) hours.
Turn over at the 6th and 12th hour interval.
At the 17th hour cut sweet green peppers into 1/8 ths lengthwise and cook in water on low heat until soft.
or
Pressure Cooker Directions
Cook on High pressure for 1 hour
Cut bread into 6 inch lengths and slice on the side lengthwise.
Pull roast apart with a fork, and using tongs, pile bread with meat and juice.

Salt to taste.
May be frozen when cooked
