I purchased a vintage Betty Crocker cookbook from ebay, copyright 1950.
I came across this recipe that I might try, decadent as it is - grilled cheese is my husband's favorite food, no kidding.
Here it is:
Crispy, golden outside.. melting, tender inside. Like glorified cheese sandwiches.
Arrange in greased baking dish, 6 thin slices of bread.
Cover with 6 thick slices of sharp cheese. (1/8 inch thick)
Top with 6 more slices of bread to create "sandwiches".
Pour over all a mixture of:
4 egg yolks or 2 eggs (beaten)
2 1/2 cups milk
1 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
1/4 tsp. dry mustard
Chill in refrigerator so milk mixture will soften bread. Bake until partially dried and golden brown on top.
Bake 1 hour at 350 degrees.
Makes 6 servings
Serve hot.
Suggestion - serve with a creamed vegetable.
