I have tried them many times and to me, they basically taste like undercooked boiled peas.  But that's just me.

I like my peanuts in the shell roasted in my oven and eaten while they are too hot!  Woman Embarassed  I love that smell!

I guess they are an acquired taste for a Yankee like me.  I had the same reaction.

@deepwaterdotter I think a lot of traditional foods in all countries are loved and treasured because they are in our family memories and many families were very poor.

A lot of things I love wouldn't do for people not raised where I was raised.  We raised peas and peas were a staple of a lot of diets back when I was a kid.

So maybe the boiled peanuts were a real treat and snack back in the day, and maybe were eaten as snacks at special times when they didn't have bagged chips and such.  Those things become our holiday and
"good time" foods that are ingrained in who we are.

@Chi-town girl you definitely want to use green peanuts.  I cook them in 6 quart pressure cooker add peanuts to fill line, cover with water and add 1/2 cup salt and 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar.  Time 60 minutes.  Natural release.

Re: Boiled Peanuts

[ Edited ]

Boiled peanuts are sold at Southern college football stadiums during games.   I know because I saw my son bring some back to our seats and his girlfriend's look of disgust.

She's now his wife.  Must not have been too disgusted.

Boiled peanuts
Boiled peanuts are popular in some places where peanuts are common. Fully mature peanuts do not make good quality boiled peanuts; rather raw or green ones are used. Raw denotes peanuts in a semi-mature state, having achieved full size but not being fully dried, as would be needed for roasting or peanut butter use. Green denotes freshly harvested and undried peanuts that must be refrigerated. After boiling in salt water they take on a strong salty taste, becoming softer with prolonged cooking, and somewhat resembling a pea or bean, to which they are related because they are legumes and a nut only in the culinary sense.>>
