I have never tried making it. In the few recipes that call for it, I have always used storebought.
Generally one can find it in cans or in tubes. My preference is the can as the tubes can dry out.

Thanks I usually buy it too..but my grocery store didn't have any today...I have a bunch of almonds in the freezer so I thought I'd try making it myself...I found a recipe on the internet and made some..its ok but I thought the taste of the store bought was stronger...thanks again...DW

@dancingwoman, from a quick google check, it looks as though the online superiornutstore sells their American Almond almond paste 7lb. can for about $44 ,which is $20 less than the americanalmond website (the manufacturer) sells it for.
I happen to really like their almond paste and I've been known to eat it straight. I've never purchased the 7lb. can because it wouldn't be safe around me (nor me around it). ![]()
I much prefer almond paste because, by law, it has to be around a minimum of 65% almonds, whereas marzipan only has to be around 35-45% almonds (I think).
This webpage is from 2006, but it's got some good info about the main brands of almond paste: good brands for almond paste? - Chowhound

For more than 85 years, American Almond Almond Paste has served as the standard for culinary professionals and home bakers alike. Made in Brooklyn, New York, it contains 65% select-grade almonds, ensuring ultimate flavor and a creamy, easy-to-work-with consistency. Deliciously sweet (but not overly so, and not nearly as sweet or stiff as marzipan) and 100% gluten-free, this exceptional almond paste brings that wonderful fresh-almond flavor into your kitchen, ready to create the most deliciously decadent treats your family and guests have ever tasted. Anyone who has settled in for a holiday baking marathon can speak for the value of ordering a 7-pound can of this essential ingredient; because when they ran out and had to dash to the store to replenish their supply, the sticker shock alone seemed to take all the wind out of your sails. Lesson learned: it’s far more cost-effective to buy your almond paste in bulk from Superior Nut Store!
Pignoli. Amaretti. Cookies, cakes, breads, wedding cake frosting, and so many more traditional Old Country favorites and exciting new desserts. American Almond Almond Paste makes everything eye-poppingly delicious. You’ll find it very smooth, a cinch to store and a joy to work with—it’s easy to roll and shape into patterns, and it plays well with other ingredients. If your wedding prep or holiday bakefest doesn’t leave you with an empty can, you can simply scoop the leftover paste into a tight-lidded container (tip: measure first) and tuck it away in a corner of your freezer. Later, simply thaw and use just as you’d use fresh-from-the-can, as it will rmaintain its velvety consistency and full-bodied flavor even after months in the deep freeze. In the end you’ll agree with the great pastry chefs that quality almond paste like this is a must-have for any well-stocked kitchen.
