Sometimes eating something natural isn't good for you.
Many food manufacturers—even some makers of commercial organic foods—are adding "carrageenan" to foods like yogurt, chocolate, soymilk, and even ice cream to give the foods a thicker consistency and to make low-fat versions taste fuller. Derived from red seaweed, it's often added to beverages to keep their ingredients from separating; you'll find it in many nutritional shakes, milk products, and milk replacements. The ingredient even crops up in certain frozen dinners, soups, and commercial broth products. The problem: carrageenan could be causing inflammation, gut irritation, and even cancer.
Thanks for the info !

YES! Another reason I love the flax milk I use- no carageenan!

I too read Carageenan isn't good for you.
I used the Almond Breeze brand for years (mainly for my coffee) but read about carageenan from the Food Babe so decided to find a brand without it. Silk Almond Milk doesn't contain it and I used it for a while, but I recently switched to the Whole Foods brand of organic almond milk (a little more expensive but the carton in the refrigerated section is a better buy than the non-refrigerated version) and love it. To me, even though I buy the unsweetened version, it has a creamier texture and better taste than what I had been using and is only 40 calories for one cup.

Just curious. I have been buying the Almond Breeze for quite some time. I buy the cartons that are not refrigerated because the refrigerated version says to use within seven days of opening. We do not always go thru a half gallon in seven days and I can keep several cartons in my cupboards at a time. I noticed on the board that someone said it last longer than milk. I am confused.
I will certainly look at the Silk brand. I did not know about the harmful ingredient. You learn so much on these boards. Thanks ladies!

Does anyone know if Silk uses steamed almonds in their almond milk or if they use almonds fumigated with ppo?

I buy 7 cartons of Almond milk weekly but recently discovered Cashew milk at 25 calories per cup. It is even better since it is creamier. I use it in coffee, tea, cereal, smoothies and even drink it by the glass. It has helped me maintain my 100 pound weight loss.

nightnurse, if you belong to Costco you can buy a package of 3 half gallons of Silk Almond Milk Unsweetend Vanilla. It saves you about $1 per half gallon. I would prefer just plain unsweetented almond but the vanilla is good in cereal, coffee and making oatmeal.
