We usually take vidalia onions and slice the top off. Then we cross cut it. we dip it in light brown sugar and top with butter. Then we bake it in foil. It is delicious but not crispy like the outback one.
A friend prepaes the onion the same and dips it in egg wash followed by panko with seasoning. Then she bakes it uncovered. She said it get crispy but is not as oily as the outback one. She has even put parmesan chees with the panko at times.

No special tool needed...just cut top off, then turn upside down and slice towards root. I made a batter and dipped it, baked at 375. I think it would be much much better if dipped in a beer batter and deep fried. I prefer to keep it healthy, lower on the fat...so I chose baking. I was not especially pleased with it. It was dry and floury, even though I drizzled oil oil. I also made the dipping sauce. Hubby wants the real deal...deep fried, all the calories and all luscious tasty fat.😑
